Hey, I just installed the windows 7 beta under VirtualBox in Ubuntu without any problems that I know of yet. My next step is to download and install Visual Studios. It will be nice getting to work with windows programming again... Visual Studios really does make the life of a programmer much easier in my opinion. Any way, I was just wondering if anyone else has been looking into Windows 7?

I've got a serial for it from the microsoft public release, but I haven't downloaded it yet.

I tried to download it about 5 times yesterday, but it always conked out after about 200mb or so. MS were having serious problems with their servers when it was released. I'm trying again. Can't wait to try it out.

The odd releases of Windows are always the best. I've never touched Vista, but version 7 looks a whole lot better.

Well, 7 is Vista with some improvements. From what I know at the moment I dare to say that the step from Vista to 7 is smaller than the one from XP to Vista was

What happened to the whole new kernel idea and minwin and what-not for 7?

I was totally hooked onto 7 until they announced that it was Vista With Improvements (tm)

Yeah, you're right - there's not a huge difference. But it's slightly more appealing now that they've addressed a lot of the minor issues that came with Vista, and cleaned it up. I think they feel they need to secure people's trust in their new OS, which they failed to do with Vista. Hence the hasty release. It's similar to Windows 95 and 98/SE; 98 was much better, yet it wasn't much different in theory.

I am using windows 7 as my development laptop's main OS. I really like it so far.

For the people using 7, is there a way to turn off that new task bar?

1. Task bar -> Properties -> Small symbols.
2. Task bar -> Properties ->Change "taskbar's pushbuttons" to "unify when taskbar is full".
It's still a bit different compared to Vista / XP, but I like it. I also like Windows 7 in general.

I tried it and i think that it can actually live up to the expectations, being fast, reactive and stable, even if it's a beta...
I could complain only about the new MS themes (7 is all blue, WMP is pearl grey and Messenger 2009 is blue AND green) that fortunately can be tweaked to be more decent.

There was only one strange thing, the CPU usage... i have a E6600, and while browsing files and images, the usage could get even to peaks of 80%, with an average of 20%.
The system anyway wasn't slowed down by this, so it doesn't look unresponsive.
Also, the two cores of the CPU were used in totally different manner, maybe they finally implemented a solid multicore support.

I don't have any hardware to test the beta but I'm interested in the new UI so I plan to get the final version....once it's sure that Visual Studio, Python and other common development tools work fine!

Feedback on those tools are welcome...

Visual Studio 2008 Express edition works well so far.

This weekend I'll probably throw it on a machine and start using it at home. If 7 is better on performance my laptop experience should be really good.

yeah, It's the first time I've seen the processes list without a scrollbar

I have been using it for about a week. It has been pretty solid (and fast) so far.
The only problem I have seen yet is that Google Analytics wont render properly in IE8. I ran it in compatability mode (under the view menu iirc).

I have been pretty happy with it. Next step is to load VS.net 2008 and start developing

Best thing is, it doesn't expire until August '09.

I like it so far. Got my development environment up and running. So far so good.

I installed Windows 7 nativ on my second computer:

Athlon XP 1700+
Ati Radeon AGP 2600XT
1gig ram
...

It runs quite well, but the disk performance is a lot slower then under winXP. The new Taskbar is also nice, rearanging Programms works now.
Ogre 1.61 (Direct3d 9, OpenGL) also runs (tested with Iris 2 and Ogre Samples, but you have to install the newest DirectX 9 runtime (like in Vista). It only has DirectX10 on board.
The OpenGL Drivers from Ati are really bad, so there are minor graphic glitches and bad fps.

This days i have to check the DirectX10 Renderer from Ogre .

wow, seven runs well on you computer ?
on mine (athlon xp 2400+, radeon 9600, 1go ram) it is very slow, it takes a huge amount of ram (600-700 Mo/1go at startup) and the cpu is nearly always at 80% when I am just surfing the web with Windows media player playing a mp3 and Windows Live Messenger in background.

But I agree with you, with a few tweaks, the new taskbar can become awesome

Hmm i tried to run my Ogre projects on Win7 and i can't... no VC++ redist.
And worse, i can't install neither the redist or VC++2008 Sp1... it says that something is binary incompatible

How did you do to setup VC++ on it?

PS: I discovered that 7 has the command: "open in new window"... finally!
I was wondering how much it would take for them.

Visual Studio 2008 works fine for me. VTune doesn't work though. And I've had a couple random crashes in vs2008 on win7 though.

Was anybody able to get Daemon tools working on 7? It kept asking me to restart my laptop, and eventually it went away but didn't install.
