WiiMote and Bluesoleil

Hi,
It's been a while since I last checked this forum, so I searched but I didn't see anything regarding using the WiiMote with the recent versions of BlueSoleil. I was using the 3.x version and that worked fine, but then over the summer I upgraded to 5.x or 6.x (I don't remember which), and as you may know there were issues with the newer versions crashing your system. Anyhow, I just tried the newest version of BlueSoleil, and I'm having the same problem. So I was wondering if anyone had any work-arounds for that or could suggest a different free Bluetooth stack. Thanks.

Most likely because this is a graphics engine forum.
For talk about using wiimotes with bluesoleil you'd have better success at a wiimote forum like:

Well, the reason that I was asking was because of posts that I have read here regarding creating games that use the Wiimote, such as in these threads:
http://www.ogre3d.org/wiki/index.php/He ... he_WiiMote
http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27509
http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=47672
http://www.ogre3d.org/addonforums/viewt ... 6f4e2718c6
etc...
But that's fine, I will seek answers elsewhere. Thank you for your time.

As Kojack said: you'd be more *successful* if you used the wiimote forum for wiimote questions.
What you're doing here, is the equivalent of asking Ogre questions @ the wiimote forum.

I hope you're not being sarcastic.
Kojack took a minute or two off of his own time to answer your question.

I apologize if what I said came off as being sarcastic, but there was no sarcasm intended. I was simply explaining why I asked questions about the Wiimote in a graphics engine forum. The intent of my original post was to see if any recent information regarding the use of Wiimotes (and specifically current Bluetooth stacks) had been posted anywhere that I might have overlooked. Anyhow, what I gathered from Kojack's answer is that nothing has been posted recently that anyone knows of (or at least anyone who read the post), and that I would have better luck elsewhere. That's cool. It's exactly what I wanted to know. So I do appreciate his (and anyone else's) time in helping me save time by redirecting my search. Thank you.

No problem.
I've done wiimote coding myself, but I only use the Broadcom stack, not the Bluesoleil (bluetooth dongles are hardware locked to specific stacks and even specific version numbers of stacks, you usually can't swap them). Walaber hasn't logged on to the forum since september last year, my ex students (who did the head tracking, using blue soleil) don't use this forum.
While some of us can answer wiimote questions (like how the report modes work, the limits of the sensors, etc), things like driver compatibility is best asked on a forum dedicated to getting the wiimote working with different drivers and bluetooth dongles.
If it was a wiimote coding question, I'd probably try to answer.
(I'll take this opportunity to state my utter disgust with the state of the blue tooth "standard". The stacks suck (broadcom have pulled their free driver download and are now charging money for it), the apis suck, most devices only support a fraction of the available profiles, even most stacks don't have all profile support. The technology is cool, but there's only a slim chance that 2 blue tooth devices will connect and do what you want. The only exception is devices designed to work together (mouse and custom dongle, wii and wiimote, ps3 and ps3 controller, etc).

Yeah, I'm just having a hell of a tie with the Bluetooth stacks right now. I originally wrote a game a year ago (inspired by Walaber's work among others) with Ogre that was a snowboarding game using the Wiimote and Nunchuk. It actually turned out really well: you used the Wiimote as the snowboard, so you tilted and rolled the Wiimote to simulate tohe motion of the snowboard. You could also custom design your own course by moving around trees, ramps, etc. I even worked in online play using the GNE (Game Network Engine). At the time that I wrote it, I was saw that everyone on the forums here who was working with the Wiimotes was using Bluesoleil, so I used that. Unfortunately, the following versions of Bluesoleil started causing your system to crash (as I'm sure you know), and I didn't figure this out until after I had upgraded my version. So now I'm going back to work on that game, but I can't even run it. I tried to find the version of Bluesoleil that I had before (3.x), but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Unfortunately, the dongle that I have someone gave me and I can't find the manufacturer, so I'm most likely just going to buy a new dongle. Anyhow, thanks again for your help. It's good to know someone else is feeling by Bluetooth-ache (yeah, that was bad

).

Personally, if I were you, I would design my game with some other control method in addition to any wiimote control you add in. Since, if you as the developer are having a hard time getting a wiimote to work, imagine the frustrations of any of your users

Though, if you are trying to target a Wii market or niche area then I ignore my input

Well, it does work with keyboard and mouse as well, but then that takes all the novelty out of it

. Anyhow, it was for a class that I did and now I'm just trying to jazz it up for my portfolio. You have a good point though. It would definitely help the developers to have more a, well, standard standard.

Seems I got lucky with my Wiimote, I just installed BlueSoleil and I was away. Took a while to understand how "wiinmote" controlled the mouse, but once I got it provided contunless hours of fun

FYI: For anyone who may be interested, I just went ahead and bought a new Bluetooth dongle, which you can get here for $20:

This one comes with the Toshiba stack and works like a charm.
