Project Wish code released under BSD
P.S. I whipped these files up rather quickly, and threw that license in. I am new to releasing code like this, so someone feel free to let me know if I did something wrong. I tried to make it abundantly clear that the Ogre code and the Boost code found therein still have their own respective licenses. I'm sure I probably overlooked something.

I care. And I think it's sad.Jerky wrote:Not that many are going to care, but PW has halted development (details at http://www.projectwish.com).
But, who knows? The last chapter of that book might yet to be written..
Awesome! Unexpectedly so.Jerky wrote:We decided to release our code under BSD so that anyone interested in it could take a look. It will take a bit of digging for anyone to find something that might be of value, but its there for those who wish to do the digging.
I do! Very much.Jerky wrote:For those looking for a gold mine of code to dig through, you might just like what you see.
The project Xavier is working on.Jabberwocky wrote:What is CoS?

Re: Project Wish code released under BSD
Actually, I still strongly believe the same as I did all across the length of the project. Xavier and I had many discussions about these beliefs as I recalljacmoe wrote:I care. 1) Possiblities and reality are not the same thing. The liklihood of the project's success, unfortunately, doesn't hinge on the possibilities. It hinges on whether or not the ducks line up. The possibilities are merely what motivate you to continue.
2) For me, I knew me getting into the industry where I needed to be would take the project's success. I wouldn't be able to be like our other contributors who were single, and could take the entry level job (which is required, as Xavier points out above). I've known that all along. For me (a guy who makes a lot more than that currently, and who has a family and a mortgage), I wouldn't be willing to make that jump (and paycut). I have known this since the earliest stages of the project, and it has only become more clear as I have gotten promotions at my day job. The young guys could take the crappy salary, but the only way for me to jump in at mid-level would be to have the project get at least to a beta stage, if not farther, and have someone notice. This possibility was very remote, but something I held onto. In the meantime, I was content to allow people to come and leave to progress on their own journey, while I had to stay and keep things going if mine was to be a success.
After 4 years, I started thinking about what I had gained, and what skills I now had. I then estimated how much longer the project was going to take, and then asked myself if I was willing to wait that long. I came to the conclusion that it was too painful to have good people come and go for a number of more years, while they achieved their goals, while I was still going to be waiting for mine, since mine was much harder to achieve, and possibly more lofty. At this time, there was a lull, and there were only a few of us working on the project. I asked them their thoughts, and they agreed. The time was right to move on to something else. I'm not yet ready to tell what that is though
So, despite me still believing the project is possible, I am not willing to wait that long. I do believe, however, that my new goals would not be possible had I not taken the journey I did with PW. Everything there has been a building block for something else, for almost everyone one of us. If my new goals are achieved, it will be because of PW and everything we did and worked on. So depending how you measure success, PW may just be already success, even though there is no game to play.
I'm glad someone will make use of it, or at least have a good time diggingjacmoe wrote:Awesome! I think working to realise your own dream and goals beats working to realise someone elses dream and goals by far.jerky wrote:That being said, I still wish to work in it one day, but I believe my path will be as an indie, getting in by releasing my own game and starting my own company. I can't see myself taking any other approach, especially with what I've seen this past year.

- Config File Readers/Writers
- Cross Platform dynamic plugin loading
- Singleton templates
- A high resolution timer
- A UID Generator
All very well generalized, and wrapped for Python to boot, you can read about the planned and implemented features in the wiki here: http://wiki.projectwish.com/index.php?t ... ox_Roadmap
Otherwise, you may be interested in picking through the tech demo and prototypes for some interesting nuggets, and in the unofficial/ directory you can find a lot of different component techniques and proof of concepts that we were evaluating, as well as some fun tools like the Visualization test written for the 2D Spatial tree.
I still hang out in the projectwish IRC Channel (#projectwish on irc.projectwish.com), so if you have any questions about any of the code, feel free to give me a poke on there, or e-mail me at grey@projectwish.com and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Re: Project Wish code released under BSD
You have taken me wrong. I was talking in general terms. I am currently working on a (potentially enless) project myself, hopefully something will come of it. If not, I have given it a go. You really do not know unless you do try. Jerky has taken that step and has done a greatly inspiring job (and it is not nessesarily the end).jacmoe wrote:Guys. I don't think anyone could have tried harder than Jerky.
So save your breath.
I have a massive amount of respect for Jerky. If he decides to start an indie dev team in the future I would gladly offer my services to him.
For myself, indie is the way to go. I could not think of anything worse than pumping out massive amounts of code for an employer to meet strict deadlines and tight budgets.
I would probably last two seconds
It should be about the love of creating something. Not being forced to do it IMO.
