This thread was inspired by me listening to Alizée... I've been a bit sad today and in the last couple of days but listening to Alizée brought some good feeling back.

I understand little French so it's a bit of a struggle to understand the lyrics but it still gets me happier pretty much every time I listen to it. There is just something about it that makes me feel better

I know some French dude who told me it's not good at all but what does he know... any ways, I keep learning more French - maybe there is something crucial I didn't understand


Do you have any singer/band who makes you feel better? What would you recommend?

Is there some particular music you listen to when you do work on your software projects? For me it's usually exactly Alizée. It has this peaceful sound which makes me calm down. I can listen to that kind of music when doing this type of work - not all kinds of music are suitable... it has to have a peaceful sound.

Reading your post I thought of Rammstein. I don't speak German, nor do I understand their music, but I like it. If I understood what they're saying I may not like it as much, I can only imagine their lyrics can get pretty twisted..

For me, I just find a good techno station from shoutcast.com. Nothing too hardcore, but something with a good beat that isn't to distracting. Helps keep the gears turning.

Well some Jamiroquai titles, some Laureen Hill titles and some Oceansize (a bit underground this one) titles.

But sometimes to feel good while working (or not) I like to listen to some "epic" musics, most of the time : MAGMA. I discovered Magma with this very video (that was suggested to me by a game designer for a game concept with an apocalyptic joyful end...). This is pure epicness. Makes me feel like I can fight the whole universe XD

When you want to feel better, there is one song which you should always have on hand: Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung!

That's my approach too. It can be difficult though, electronic music is my favourite genre but I hate 99% of it, too bland. I usually go for the Digitially Imported Classic Electronic or Tech House stations, I like their 24k stereo aac+ streams, low enough bandwidth so I can use my mobile broadband but good enough quality so I can record the good stuff.

And other days I just wander around Shoutcast to see if I find someone streaming some good stuff before they get closed down.

I'm surprised to hear that I'm not the only Mindless Self Indulgence fan. They're quite colorful characters.

Anyway, for me, it doesn't get any better than Tool.

More seriously, I like all types of metal, but when i'm stuck with some segfaults or whatever bug in my program, I like to hear classical music (Dvorak's symphony n°9, a Dies Irae from Mozart or Verdi, or Beethoven's Sonata Pathétique)

I listen to Nectarine all the time.

Cool I like Rammstein too. When I first heard them on the radio driving my car back from the college to home I was like absolutely going nuts! Couldn't stay seated almost. Should have pulled over to the side of the road to let the song finish and not create too much danger on the road.

I'd never heard of MSI, until my sister told me there was an awesome music video of them directed by Jhonen (I'm a massive Invader Zim / JTHM fan) where a guy throws a baby and it gets embedded in another guy's chest. After seeing it (the one I linked above) I bought all their cds I could find.


I don't know how I forgot the greatest ass kicking song of all time. If I ever have to save the world from an alien invasion / zombie plague / etc this is the song I'll have playing on my iriver: Molotov - Apocalypshit. It was used in the awesome game Total Overdose whenever the game detects you are on a killing spree.

Ah Rammstein. I don't know what to think about them, but they are featured in one of the most shocking video clips I've ever seen.

I also like her music (the songs from "Alizee en Concert"), althought my french isn't the best. Apart from that, I like the gold old classics e.g. from Toto or Genesis. I am also very interested in movie scores (Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Howard Shore, ...), currently composing a bit myself .
