Choosing a (conflicting?) name of an opensource project

Hello,

I was thinking Ogre folks could help me on this one.
I'm about to release an open source project, and spread it over the web.

I was thinking of the name Vertigo.NET (yeah it's .NET).
the problem is... that there is a (tiny?) software company named "Vertigo" http://www.vertigo.com

well... should this stop me, should I choose another name?

If it's not the same domain of software (you're not solving the same problems) then it should be fine.

If you're not sure, just change a bit the name like VertigoLib or something like that.

Also there is the famous example of wxWindows -> wxWidgets.
but facing microsoft's layers may be a different story.

No problem, naming is always hard.

Just name them after animals like I do, or make up words (take out vowels, add an i, or an x).

I don't know how wxWindows was forced to switch to wxWidgets though, "Windows" is a generic term. I thought Microsoft couldn't trademark it, that's why they always have "Microsoft Windows" as the brand name.
