Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
Want to work on a realistic flight simulator?
Looking for strong programmers with:
- some experience in c++
- experience with OpenGL
- Physx SDK experience would be really wonderful but not necessary
We have a team of mostly 3D modelers and are looking for more programming help. Our lead programmer can give some guidance, if you run into trouble with the tasks you are working on. The tasks will involve creating supporting software tools such as terrain editor, HUD editor, control panel editor, etc. Any team members must be willing to work for free. If you are interested, please contact us at the following email address for more information:
fsrotorcraft[at]gmail.com (replace [at] with @. This helps to prevent spam.)
Thanks!
Brandon

Why can't you make any progress until you have more help?

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
The project manager, who is also a programmer, cannot program the whole sim by himself. (Don't ask, it's him telling me this) He knows C++, but not a huge amount, and we just need more help if we are ever going to release the sim.

Why can't he learn C++ more? I don't get it, this sounds fishy to me.

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
Fishy?! Since when can the average person just program an entire flight simulator with many many features all by himself? It would never be released. sure he can learn more, but why not have someone with experience on the team? Very simple to understand.

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
You are right it is impossible for an average person to program an entire flight simulator by him/her self, however it is possible for an average person to code game logic, control logic, game states, physics, ai behaviors and everything else that goes into an entire flight simulator then combine all that into an entire flight sim. The universe I live in is fascinating in that way, for example it is impossible for me to walk up an entire set of stairs, however it is possible for me to lift my foot up a bit and eventually I'm up a flight of stairs. It is baffling and if I spend too much time thinking about it I may go insane, so lets just stop here.
Anyway all I'm saying is that it is possible for a single person to create a flight sim, and assuming that it isn't is pretty much giving up to begin with, and then yes it is impossible to get something done if you give up to begin with especially something as complicated as an entire flight sim. Sure having a team helps or hurts depending on the team, but if you don't have one it doesn't mean you can't start and get things done and eventually completed.

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
I tell my friend that we can get going, but he just keeps saying we need a team before we go any further. And then I go, "Uggggggggg!!!"
I'm sure he could get stuff done, but he wants this sim to be "very advanced" and says he needs more help. As part of the three person team, I went here and asked for help.
FlightGear didn't get where it is today with just one person. There are many people behind the scenes. If our sim is ever to take off, we need a little more than three people.

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
Brandon, I'm sorry to say this, but for many people (myself included)
A better way to pick up new team members would be to get started on the project yourself, then come here, show what you have, and ask help with a specific part (like the terrain engine, shaders, flight dynamics, whatever). People are much more inclined to jump in on a project if they feel they can use their own skills to help other skilled people, if they feel their skill can complement the skills of the rest of the team.
usually sounds very much likeWe really can't make any progress until we have more help
It might sound harsh, but let me put it in another way... If you had the choice of doing all the work on my project, or doing all the work on your own project (no money involved in either project), which would you choose. We have a really cool idea, but none of us know how to do it or have the will to learn how to do it, so now we're looking for someone to do all the hard work for us

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
Guess your right.
I'm not the programmer though. Just the graphics artist. The programmer doesn't have the knowledge to get much done. He is trying to learn though, but personally, I don't see him ever getting much done. That's why we need a team. Look at Microsoft. If one person worked on their games, they wouldn't be that good at all.
I really don't want to hear all the reasons why no one will help. I just came to look for help. Apparently, this is the wrong place.

The programmers at Microsoft usually get paid through... If you're willing to pay, I'm sure there would be a lot more interest, even for a project in the startup phase.BrandonF wrote:Guess your right.

If you expect people to work on your project without getting paid, though, it usually takes something to prove it's worth working for you.

Just got two help offers over on another forum. They both know they won't get paid. One even said he would prefer to do free work. Things are possible!

We were going to build our own 3D engine at first, but we will use Ogre later after we get a working sim in a few weeks.

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
Actually, planning to write a 3D engine only to obsolete it and rework the basics after "a few weeks" is the worst long term plan I ever heard..BrandonF wrote:We were going to build our own 3D engine at first, but we will use Ogre later after we get a working sim in a few weeks.
And makes me wonder if some of you really knows what a 3D engine is

I think you didn't get it, and they want to get the physics simulation part working before focusing on graphics._tommo_ wrote:Actually, planning to write a 3D engine only to obsolete it and rework the basics after "a few weeks" is the worst long term plan I ever heard..BrandonF wrote:We were going to build our own 3D engine at first, but we will use Ogre later after we get a working sim in a few weeks.

Yes, that's it. Also, I'm not the programmer. I'm getting the info from the actual programmer for the sim, and I might word it a little weird because I have no idea what he is talking about.so0os wrote:I think you didn't get it, and they want to get the physics simulation part working before focusing on graphics.

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
Change of plans. We are using Unity instead because of the possibilities of their 3d engine combined with the game/physics engine. We still need programmers. (C#, C++, Python, and Javascript programmers to be exact)

why do you need so many different programming language programmers?

Re: Flight Sim Project - Programmer Needed
Someone should close this thread, they use Unity (because of physics integrated with the graphics ?! since ogre can't do it
) obviously they dont need any help from the Ogre community.
You should really get a better technical decision maker!

That's a good choice.BrandonF wrote:Change of plans. We are using Unity instead because of the possibilities of their 3d engine combined with the game/physics engine.
And then let's let this topic fade out.

Don't ask me. I don't know the programming stuff. I'm just posting for help wanted.chaosavy wrote:I can't help it ok...

@Others: Yeah, lets let the thread fade out. Probably was a stupid idea of mine to say what our decision was, LOL.
