Language popularity.

Post by mkultra333 »

Found this page on what languages are being used. Thought it interesting that C beats C++ (18.0% versus 8.5%), and C usage has gone up while C++ has gone down. Also quite a surge in Lua and D usage. Top of the heap was Java, at 18.8%.

tbh I don't particulary trust those results only becuase I can't find out how they compile the information.

I mean are they just looking at search result for each language and the number of pages? If so that would make the results a load of crap in my eyes. If they performed a survey on actual developers and let them choose the languages they can program in and there primary language I think that would be a more reliable result.

I think those numbers are a product of the college education system. The school I went to we started out with C, learned OO in java, using any other language was forbidden.

The general BSCompSci isn't going to go out and learn a new language, most of them aren't even proficient in the languages they know.

Thats my take anyway.
