spacegaier, great job !!
It seems so that it was realy time consuming to analyse and present the results.
It's very interesting to know the Ogre user details.

For my own I like to recognize, that nearly 10 percent of the users use Mogre (C#). 8)

By the way:
Page 8 and 9 (Organization size) seems to be redundant.
Help to add information to the wiki. Also tiny edits will let it grow ...

The single biggest surprise to me is the huge number of linux developers, almost half as many as windows, and over twice the size of the OSX crowd.

The list of "most important/anticipated future changes for Ogre" also had some great ideas on it.

Fixed (after all those hours on the same document it seems you get routine-blinded ;) ).

I noted two very interesting informations :

1. Most users use Blender.

It's obvious when you see that most users are students or "indie-size" teams that certainly can't afford some licences and also know that Blender is far enough (once learnt) to do 3D modelling.
That makes me think that maybe some extra efforts should be put in keeping blender exporters in sync with current Ogre features and also maybe extra efforts in adding Ogre-specific tools in Blender.

I'm saying this knowing that the Ogre team already have a lot to do so I don't think it will be their focus in short term. I guess it have to be a community effort. I know that someone works on the blender exporters but I don't know the current state (not having worked with Ogre for 2 years now, but will get back to it in few months).

2. Most users use Octree SM.

This is interesting because I thought that most people getting commercial or "serious" would have to write specific SM but it seems totally wrong.

What I'd like to know is : I thought from various (old) discussions around that the Octree SM is a "naive" or "simplist" but general enough to give basic decent performances. If that's the case then maybe there could be improvements? That would (maybe?) help with the performance request I guess... Maybe giving opportunities to specifalize the SM would help? Not sure, I'm far from being a specialist. Anyway I think it's interesting that the most general SM is still the most used.

My 2 cents.

Sinbad originally planned a major redesign for the SceneManager for Ogre 2.0. Let's see if we can still get that done...

Great work spacegaier thank you for putting the time and effort in, the report and some very interesting info in it. :D

I use the standard Octree SM, and to be honest the reason I have not written my own is because it has not really limited me, yet. I dont really think it occurs to most people that writing there own SM will offer them much more. If it aint broke dont fix it! Having said that I think it definitely needs a revamp!!

Same here, and I think it's the same for a lot of people. However, I think there might be a lot of people who doesn't understand the impact of using this SM for very specific space structures (like, obviously, car simulations). So what I was thinking is that maybe those people don't know they coulde make things better with custom SM and maybe OctreeSM isn't in shape to be optimal for general purpose.
As I didn't hit the performance limits yet myself, maybe there is no need to improve it, I agree.

Ah yes I forgot about that! Ogre Team said there will be at least one release before 2.0 so I guess it's not for next year.

We are currently planning internally the next releases. As soon as we are done, we will most likely tell you guys ;) .

Good idea. :D

I don't know the current state, but there seems to be a new and improved Blender exporter in development.
For details look to its wiki page and the linked forum topics.

By the way:
On the wiki page of the "current" Blender Exporter is a link to the sources in the Ogre SVN. Is it really still maintained in Ogre SVN?
If it's maintained in Ogres new Mercurial repository, it would be nice if somebody updates the source link in the wiki.

Were the generic and octree scene managers merged in the survey question or just in the results? Because they are quite different.

Nothing was merged, so Generic and Octree was one answer possibility.

It definitely won't be that long until the next survey, especially given the many possible new questions the community proposed. We almost have enough questions for a second survey :D .
