It drives me crazy that 19 times out of 20 people post resources to various sites and then include either no license information, or something vague to the point of useless. As an example, I need some splatter brushes for my game, I would prefer the most liberal license possible. I can find about one million pages of spatter brushes out there, but every time the license info is ambiguous garbage. Here's a typical example:
Great... except note that it doesn't say you can use them for free. A lawyer would have a field day with that. And if you think I'm being picky, well, lawyers live to be picky, beyond all reasonable bounds. I've seen debates over exactly what "use" means. These brushes may be used for commercial or non-commercial work. Crediting http://www.photoshoptutorials.ws in your work is appreciated but not required.
(Another I see a lot is "Feel free to use this for anything you want,", which is not the same as "Use this for anything you want, for free.")
Code is just as bad. Site after site people post code or even complete downloadable project, and then give absolutely NO license info at all. I was just looking for some metaball code, and there's plenty out there to show how clever the author is, but it's useless because of the lack of license. (Fortunately http://www.paulsprojects.net has a lot of handy code, and always includes a nice, clear MIT with everything.) Some sites for programmer questions specifially state in the small print that everything there is copyright to the board.
I want slap these posters and say "What are you doing? THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!" I can only assume they are either well meaning but totally legally clueless, are only posting to show their cleverness and don't want their resources to be used, or are laying legal traps to try and catch some poor sucker who actually uses their stuff so they can sue them for whatever they can get.
