Tainted Fate - unveiling of my new game!

Post by SickBrick »

Hello lovely people of the Ogre forums, the last time I showed you my game SickBrick, you had nothing but praise and constructive criticism for me. So I decided to show you my next game, Tainted Fate!

Tainted Fate is a horror adventure game played with two protagonists with original gameplay features.
Main site: http://taintedfate.blogspot.com/

PreAlpha video:

If you like what you see and would like to support the development of the game, I've got a funding campaign going at: http://www.indiegogo.com/taintedfate
If you can't contribute, at least share the campaign on google+, facebook and other sites as much as you can.

Features:.

Played in first person, it immerses you into a dynamic story that depends on your decisions featuring two protagonists in different timelines on the same island.
Escape horrifying monsters, solve puzzles and make decisions that will alter yourself and the shape of the world.

Story:

The first storyline set in the 1940's follows a man convicted of murder and sent off to the island for the rest of his life. Soon after being dropped off, strange things start to happen as you explore the island, later developing into a story full of mystery, arcane magic twisted with technology and terrifying hostile beings.
The second storyline is set in 2012 and features a young female amateur filmmaker that investigates sites with supposed paranormal activity. Upon hearing about the long abandoned island filled with stories about magic and ghosts, she immediately leaves for the island to film the most terrifying film of her life.

Graphics:

Tainted Fate is being developed in NeoAxis engine (which in turn uses Ogre as the graphics engine) and uses the latest effects like Depth Of Field, SSAO, FXAA and Light Scattering to create an immersive and atmospheric world for you to plunge into.

That's it for now. Cheers!

Man, you really like normal mapping, don't you?
On a more serious note, I think you should tone it down a bit. Or maybe it is the specular lighting that brings up all the details. Besides that, or even with that, it looks great, it reminds me of that old horror game with the lighthouse, can't remember what it was called.

Yeah, I still have to normalize the normalmaps in photoshop. They don't contain the neutral color I think, just the left, right, top, bottom ones (I don't know normalmap terminology :D) so they look excessively strong. That's a side effect of the way I make normalmaps.
IT SHALL BE FIXED

Out of curiosity, do you have any gameplay yet? Or just the models.
And how did you do the fly-by? Some animation track or just free flying with the keyboard/mouse?

Of course we have gameplay :D You can walk around, knock stuff over (the amnesia type physics manipulation is halfway implemented), you can sprint, die, swim, the inventory is almost fully functional,...
The scripting of the levels and events hasn't yet been started, I'll start that when I complete most of the assets for the island and interiors.

camera flying based on about 100 points connected with bezier curves.

Why not download the demo and try it all out: http://www.indiedb.com/games/taintedfat ... hatechdemo

Well, color me impressed. It looks very good and the movement is smooth also  . How long did it took you to get it to this stage?

EDIT:
I also like the map name! You should add a porta potty on one of the cliffs.

It took me 6 months (that includes making the island and everything on it at the moment, writing the story (no small feat, since it has multiple branches and twists) and making the concepts for everything). I'm trying to get the LOD's to for every model to be optimal, hence the smoothness. And BTW NeoAxis has improved like 200% lately. V1.3 will bring terrain LOD so expect the game to run even better and have smoother terrain then.

Man yeah, the game was codenamed "Cliffs of Shit" hahaha, everybody loved that name so much, it stuck for so long that it's still the main map's name :D

If anyone wants to see a little bit about the post effects (effects that the graphics card applies after rendering a frame of the game) that we have in Tainted Fate at the moment, head on over here and read the article ;)

If anyone wants to see how the island in the game came to be from a single sketch to a very complex and detailed game-area, you can do that here:

aaaand... it's me again.
I made a little news post about how you can change the graphics fidelity from High (looks great) to very low (runs on any PC), you can check it out here:
http://www.indiedb.com/games/taintedfat ... inted-fate

Remember, we're running an indiegogo campaign to help the development of the game. Even a single dollar brings us closer to our goal. Hell, if every tenth visitor left a dollar, we'd have 10000 already :D

Just wanted you all to know the Indiegogo funding campaign for Tainted Fate failed :(

But I'm not giving up. I'll make a new one tonight and I'll ask for 1500$ (that's half of what I asked for originally and can barely cover what I need for development). I will also opt for flexible funding (Indiegogo takes a bigger percentage from what I get, but I get the money even if I don't reach the goal).

If I don't get that money, the game won't be as good as I envisioned it, but I'll develop it regardless and make it as good as I can, even with the resources I have now.

I'll inform you all and throw a link to the new campaign tonight.
Cheers!

Sad to see it failed.
What were you doing to try to reach more people? I know a lot of campaigns (indiegogo or KS, doesn't matter) failed because they relied on the platform itself and some forums only to reach a bigger audience.
Of course, even if you do a lot more, you might still have bad luck :)

Bad luck I guess. I reached out to a lot of news sites, forums, social media,... In the first two weeks I received money every day and then it just kinda stopped :\

Hey - I checked out SickBrick before and liked it - so I checked out your campaign.

If you don't want to hear some unsoliscited advice stop reading now........

Here's what jumped out at me about your campaign:

Why should you give me money?
•Because the game will be awesome, innovative, scary and even funny (newspapper clippings reveal stuff like this: "Man claims his sperm cures breast cancer!")
This might work well as an easter egg, but not so much for why someone should give you money. I think this might scare off some people who'd want to contribute. One of the reasons I say this is because you present your game as this spooky/scary deal - and I think you do this well - it looks the part, but then you go and throw this in. If you want to have a bit of humour that's cool - but I think you should toss it in the form of an "easter eg" where its sporadic and has to be found by careful exploring.

The other reason is that this is a sort of a "childish" joke - which I think - makes you seem jouvenile, therefore less thrustworthy. I like jokes and sillyness - probably too much - but in a pitch for money I think you should skip this.

•It's NOT built in Unreal Engine 3 or Unity, so it looks and feels different from most indie games these days. In case you're wondering, it's being built in NeoAxis, an underrated AAA quality-capable engine.
Who outside of someone who develops games would care about this? Not many I think.
•You're not really giving me money. You're investing in an awesome future-product ;)
Nah... the people are giving you money.

I don't mean any offense, I think your project looks awesome and by playing your previous game I think you have what it takes to do good with the funds that you'd raise, but I think you should attempt to polish up your pitch.

Also:
Return To Island game mode
This is a really cool thing - but first you are making a scary/atmospheric game, and now its a FPS shooter - these are different audiences I think, so it jumped out at me as well.. The people who fund you probably want more spooky/scary/atmospheric, not run and gun.

Good luck!

Just wanted you all to know that Indiegogo fucked me over and returned every contribution made to my Tainted Fate campaign two days after somebody would contribute. I would have made 1240$ if all had gone as it was supposed to, but instead I made 60$.
Indiegogo blamed PayPal and said they're returning the money, PayPal blamed Indiegogo and said there's an error in their system.
So that's that, I won't be using Indiegogo in this lifetime anymore.
Thanks to all the people that tried to contribute :D You're awesome.
I'm still not giving up and am looking for potential people from the US or the UK that could make a funding campaign for me on Kickstarter without screwing me over. God knows I've had enough of that.
Cheers people and may the development continue!

I apologise for resurrecting an old topic, still better than making a new one every two months when I have news :D
Tainted Fate is coming along as planned and the further I'm getting in development, the better the game seems, which in turn gives me more motivation.
Anyway, I was on TV talking about how I make games and stuff, so if anyone's interested in watching, here: http://youtu.be/0Km4oT7CKTQ
It's in Croatian, but I put in english subtitles.
They also did a 20 minute interview, but that takes a lot of time to subtitle, so I'll put that on youtube another time.
Cheers!
