Can submeshes share vertices?

Can submeshes share vertices?

Can submeshes share vertices that are storted in Mesh object?

I would like to have one big list of vertices in a Mesh object and submeshes wolud have only list of faces.

Is this possible?
What is better (faster) to have submeshes with their own list of vertices or to have one big list of vertices in Mesh object and only faces in submesh?
