Weathered Souls(early development - 3d Tiled Terrain)

Post by shadowfeign »

*edited title, and cleaned up description.

I'm currently in early stages of my game. I don't work on it as much as I would like, but I'm getting close to having the terrain element finished finally and thought I'd show it off and get some comments on it. I posted it in the screenshot thread, but I think I'll make its own thread for it now to see what people think and hopefully keep me motivated to keep pressing forward.

The game is a tactics RPG similar to shining force and final fantasy tactics. The game is split into two phases.

Phase 1. create tile engine and create a simple game that uses the tile engine. This will be a small barrel pushing game called Edens Harbor. Most features in Edens Harbor will be directly used in the tactics game making it a logical step giving me a completed game earlier in development.

Phase 2. build from Edens Harbor and create Tactical RPG. Tentative title is Weathered Souls, but perhaps I will have to call it Shining Emblem Tactics or something to play off a few names;) I kid of course. The game will have a heavy focus on strategy and exploration. There will be a world map to explore instead of dots like final fantasy tactics. Any elements that are only filler will be removed though. Levels I consider a strategy breaking element and will be capped at 5. Armor will play a role with pluses and negatives as will all other weapons. Don't expect to see any +5000 weapons. Characters from the beginning of the game will be less skilled, but a guy with a crossbow is still going to hurt just as much whether you are at the beginning or end of the game.

Well, I'm in development of phase 1. I tried a couple different methods here and there and have had to rewrite things a couple times to make them more flexible as I've found that I needed. I still need to improve textures, and normals, and I think there is an ogre bug in there that I need to track down, though I'm using somewhat of an old version of ogre 1.7.4 I think. something causing the lighting to be ignored on my submesh that has 3 uv sets. Right now however i'm busy rewriting the level format so everything is broken:( hopefully I'll have that fixed soon and start some more real progress. There is a lot to do though.
