Oculus has just announced that they've bought Raknet, the popular game network library. The cool thing is they've released it as open source (under the modified bsd license used by facebook).
My students used to use Raknet for projects back in the early days. Our game Scooterama (won best indie game at the 2004 australian game developer conference) used Ogre and Raknet.
But over the years it became more restricted and commercial. It's good to see it fully open again.
So... which graphics engine do you think Oculus will buy first?
(If I read that they've bought Ogre, remember that I made the cube, geosphere and barrel meshes in the sample browser. I want my cut!)
Thanks for sharing this! I've used Raknet for years, and I've always been frustrated there wasn't another network package that was better in the open source community. This will be a great win for the open source gaming community.
Holy shit I'm using RakNet!!! That's good news for me (if I get a lot of money with my game - it will not happen - I will have one less company to give money to!) I hope the same happen for fmod...
