LGPL and attribution

Post by lingfors »

Hi.

Does anyone know what the rules or best practices are when it comes to attribution of the copyright holder of an LPGL project you have forked? In each file, I have
// Copyright (C) 20XX Yyy Zzz
//
// This library is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it
// under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License as published by
// the Free Software Foundation; either version 2.1 of the License, or (at
// your option) any later version.
//
// This library is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT
// ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or
// FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. See the GNU Lesser General Public
// License (COPYING.txt) for more details.
//
// You should have received a copy of the GNU Lesser General Public License
// along with this library; if not, write to the Free Software Foundation,
// Inc., 59 Temple Place, Suite 330, Boston, MA 02111-1307 USA
Of course, I want to attribute the original developer Xxx Yyy correctly (since each file is heavily based on the original work), while still include my own copyright (since each file contains quite a bit of modifications).

(I'm posting here since I have always received great feedback, and also to give the Ogre community a bit of a heads up since the project, while not directly related to Ogre, might be quite useable in Ogre projects.)

AFAIK it is perfectly acceptable to add your own copyright below (or even above) the original. The MPL (with which I am much more familiar) has a specific contributors block at the bottom of the license for this, but the LGPL does not.

Often I see the forked person put their copyright under the first one in the source files. Then, usually a readme or something where there can be a few sentences outlining where the original source came from and a summary of the modifications.

Could you link me to an example?

Sebastian Diaz is the new maintainer of cgicc and put his copyright under the older one:
