Damn Camstudio!

Post by N0vember »

Geeeeeeez
I just go to download my usual screen recording software to make a small video. Camstudio, used it many times a few years ago.
I install, pass the 3 annoying software it tries to force on me (a navigator, and browser shit).
Then something strange happens, I go to the task scheduler and I already have three fishy .exe running.
Now in the browser I have a grey bar on top and two extensions I never installed.

I go to read some reviews, and just a few guys mention that it contains three malwares.

And it advertises itself as open-source ! It is on SourceForge !

So we live in a world where antivirus stop you from launching your own .exe you just built and makes it disappear without telling you a thing, but neither it or Windows can do a fucking thing when a install program install three malwares in a row....

And this program is all over internet, on legitimate sites, hosted on SourceForge, and there is no fucking mechanism to protect anyone from this.

I needed to vent ! I'm gonna break a few things in the house now.....

And sorry for the profanity, I hope it's okay in lounge section.... I'm just completely annoyed at the state of technology sometimes.

I continued the investigation. Apparently SourceForge project is fine, but the first hit you get on google is Camstudio.org, and that is the malware-ridden version.
A guy probably popped in, wrapped the thing in malwares, setup a site, and is now making a lot of money. On the back of a legit open-source software. Oh the irony.

So now I'm downloading the legit version. SourceForge is not responsible for this shit in the end.

Try and search for "KDevelop for Windows" :)

WARNING! DO NOT DOWNLOAD ->
http://www.windows7download.com/win7-kd ... mkovi.html

It's hilarious: 5MB download.. and this text:
KDevelop is a free, open source IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for MS Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris and FreeBSD.
It has never been available for Windows.

But the best part is this:
Windows 7 Download periodically updates pricing and software information of KDevelop full version from the publisher, but some information may be out-of-date. You should confirm all information.
Using warez version, crack, warez passwords, patches, serial numbers, registration codes, key generator, pirate key, keymaker or keygen for KDevelop license key is illegal and prevent future development of KDevelop

Haha, shit, the internet is a scary place. No need to go on darknet, it's messed-up enough up here already. Like a gigantic zoo filled with software dealers and sharks and boobs.

I finally recorded my video, and I think my computer is fine. I don't even want to install an anti-malware to check, because to me malware and anti-malware is just one and the same thing....

Symantec and Oracle falls into that category.

Good news about the real Camstudio not being fubared - I might need it sometime. :)

For screencaps, check out Debut:

http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/

Haven't used it in a while, but it was malware free last time I checked.

Also, related pro tip: you can disable the "Ask toolbar" nagging option in Java updates (love this trick):

OBS Open Broadcaster Software is the best screen recording software I've seen. Even better than FRAPS.

Better than fraps? Wow, I should probably test this then. Do you mean on the performance side or ux?

Quality and performance. The ux could use some help because it overwhelms you with options and functionality (it doesn't just allow you to record, but also perform live streams and add audio with your mic on the footage, embed your webcam onto the footage, and probably more stuff I don't know about)

If you just need graphics recording and have a NVIDIA card I can recommend ShadowPlay.
In my case I had an fps drop of around 5%. This seems to vary between configurations.
Summoning Wars is an open source role-playing game, featuring both a single-player and a multiplayer mode for about 2 to 8 players.
