Free content sources...

I was thinking... Lots of people (like me) want to create demos/games but dont have the time/talent/knowledge (or all 3 like me haha) to create their own content. Perhaps it would be a good idea to create a thread consisting of places on the net where one can find content to put in his/her creations for free (legally of course). I have a few links myself but i dont have the time to fetch them all right now so i'll edit this post later today.

If you think that this is the wrong forum (i was thinking either this or general) or that there is no point for this type of thread feel free to move/delete it. (moderators of course)

Post away!

3dcafe.com - but I am not sure whether they can be used commercially.

I just found this site a few days ago. http://scifi3d.theforce.net/list.asp?in ... ntCatID=13

That's a link down into a specific model category. You can browse around to other stuff. Maybe someday I or someone else can use some of these cool models in a sort of 'second generation' Ogre demo.

their liscense agreement states:
3DCAFE, and all its contents, is copyrighted by Platinum Pictures Multimedia, Inc., (referred herein as "Platinum Pictures"). All of the models/texture maps/software (referred herein as "datasets") available on 3DCAFE for download may be used royalty-free for your own usage. If any of the datasets available on 3DCAFE are to be used commercially, or altered in anyway to be used commercially, you must give proper and visible credit in your commercial product, (i.e., Models (Textures) provided by 3DCAFE.COM).
So it looks like fair game. I'll have to dig around and see whats available there. It'd be great to be able to harness all the "indie" game energy on the web.

Speaking of which, I find it interesting to read people complain about the shortage of artists. Usually, I've seen it the other way 'round in the UT mod community. Maybe because the average poster here is a bit more serious, and has a higher standard of "good"?

Take a look at TurboSquid, they also have some free assets. Just search things with 0 price.

There's a pretty simple reason for that when dealing with Mods for games. Artists congregate towards modding existing games because they have the tools to allow them to actually integrate content into the game, and they know they can contribute artwork, 3d models, etc. and it'll be used. Also, an existing game like UT has a thriving community of players who are actively playing the game, but contributing to a game that is in development and may not (probably not) succeed could be a waste of time.

hopefully you have a decent virus scanner if you go to this site and try LEMOG3D -> VRML2 and than the link to lk-3d.com/canu/arsenal.htm (the virus is not on this site but on lk-3d.com, nevertheless ugly... )

Hmm, I didn't know about that. My scanner never reported anything before (AVG).

I'm using firefox. Another browser could be smarter to not download the virus. :?:
This is a good site. The guy should just remove the link to the other site.

Has anyone here signed up for 3dcafe's VIP service? It's a fairly expensive annual fee ($379.99). I couldn't find any docs on what in detail is included - a few dozen models? A few hundred models?

Also, if you see something nice in a game mod you can also contact the author for permission to use that model. Generally, those people are happy to see their stuff be used in a game. (that's why they made the mod in the first place anyway)
