Name for Ogre 2.1?
UPDATE: POLL FROZEN UNTIL WE SORT A FEW THINGS. WE WILL PROBABLY RUN THIS POLL AGAIN AFTER SOME COMMUNITY FEEDBACK. PLEASE ACCEPT OUR APOLOGIES TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY VOTED
Unofficially our source code is branding both 2.0 and 2.1 as "Tindalos", but this wasn't final. In fact it was just carried when moved from the default branch.
We've been deliberating with the rest of the team, and it is time to put a name for Ogre 2.0 and 2.1.
Because the 2.x branch is quite different from 1.x; we've decided to change the convention. Previously we were using the Cthulhu mythos for naming each release. At first we thought of greek mythos, naming 2.1 particularly "Phoenix" (as in rise from the ashes), but many members of the team started to point out there's a lot of engines out there named phoenix (and using greek mythology based names). TL;DR... it was too cliché.
So we agreed with a naming scheme similar to Android's: Start naming our releases using letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E... with each letter being the first of a word related with fabric, building materials, or types rocks in allusion to our new Physically Based Shading system that's standard since the 2.1 release.
Even though 2.0 doesn't come with PBS+Hlms out of the box, we've decided to use this naming convention for 2.0 as well, due to the breaking changes.
Therefore, Ogre 2.0 will be codenamed 'A' and Ogre 2.1 will be codenamed 'B'. Now it is up to you to vote among the candidates for the full name!
The poll in this thread will decide for Ogre 2.1. We hope you like this decision regarding the name conventions.
Make sure to also vote for the Ogre 2.0 name

Ehi Matias, is this poll also open to suggestions?
Because in that case my vote definitely goes to "Beryllium".
Check here how cool is it!

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
Grrr!!! "Beryllium" is a cool name!
I knew I was making a mistake when I created this thread, until one of the team devs asked if I was gonna accept suggestions. The problem with the poll is that the others already have a head start.
Will definitely keep in mind first asking for suggestions first for the next versions. (so no, this poll won't be accepting suggestions to keep the poll fair and prevent further confusion)

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
Brocade is a publicly traded network hardware company worth about $4.3 billion . You might run into trademark issues with that one.
Personally I'm not a fan of any of the choices. I believe the name should be related to Ogres. Or at least something that isn't cloth and rocks...
Buckler, Brawler, Battle Axe, Broadsword, Bludgeon, Bardiche, Ballista, Battlement, Barbican, Barbarian, Battlecry, Bassinet, Barbute, Burgonet, etc.

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
Ok so I'm freezing and will be re-running the poll because of serious errors on my behalf. Apologies to those who have already voted.
Here's the situation: Candidates are:
(**)Not strictly a material, but a shiny metal helmet that has to do with Ogres, I'm relaxing the rules here.
I've added Beryllium which was suggested by the community. Anyone has something else to add? (suggest new names, potential infringments, SEO search issues, etc)
Here's the situation: Candidates are:
- Basalt
- Basanite
- Barathea
- Barbican (*)
- Barkcloth
- Beryllium
- Batiste
- Brocade ---> Out. Has trademark infringement potential.
- Burgonet (**)

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
Barbuta would probably be a better option than Burgonet. As it's more Ogre'y and more shinny: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/73 ... 575343.jpg
She also has a Besagew over her armpits.
I think the best course of action would be to open it up and allow anyone to suggest anything that starts with a B. Maybe link a wikipedia to each of the suggestions so we know what they are. And limit it to your theme of "Something that is a material (cloth, rocks, metal, wood, etc.) or objects there of (like my helmets or things made with those materials.)"
After a set amount of time, have the team curate the list and stick up a poll. That way we're not limited to a small selection at first, yet the team still has a choice to kick out names they don't like.
(And do the same for 2.0 as well.)
Just my 2 cents.

yeah, it feels kind of like election day when you are supposed to choose between canidates you don't really like (-:
never cared for Ogres version name, guess that was due to the fact that the old names were uncatchy( unless your a o!!@24r??foh3px mythology fan... )
Ogre versions deserve cool, simple and catchy names, having a wider selection can definity help
mmm...Bronze is a material, isn't it?...
Edit: "Ogre Beowulf" sound cool and catchy( thanks to the great CG in the movie... ) (-:
according to wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogre

according to wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogre
...Deeep....The word ogre is thought to have been popularized by the works of Italian author Giambattista Basile (1575–1632), who used the Neapolitan word uerco, or in standard Italian, orco. This word is documented[2] in earlier Italian works (Fazio degli Uberti, 14th century; Luigi Pulci, 15th century; Ludovico Ariosto, 15th–16th centuries) and has even older cognates with the Latin orcus and the Old English orcnēas found in Beowulf lines 112–113, which inspired J.R.R. Tolkien's Orc

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
There's already 63 trademarks for the name Ogre and 75 for Brocade.bronzebeard wrote:Brocade is a publicly traded network hardware company worth about $4.3 billion . You might run into trademark issues with that one.
As long as we don't conflict in the trademark categories, it's ok.

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
Brocade writes software. Ogre3d is software. Of the 75 trademarks that have the word 'Brocade' in them only 31 are alive. Strip out the ones that have other words in them, and you're down to 5. Of those 5, 4 mention software (and are owned by Brocade). 1 is for the mineral.Kojack wrote:There's already 63 trademarks for the name Ogre and 75 for Brocade.bronzebeard wrote:Brocade is a publicly traded network hardware company worth about $4.3 billion . You wouldn't call Ogre versions, 'Apple' or 'Google' or 'Microsoft.' You can say "They don't make video games." Which is true. But there is close enough overlap (software), and they're big enough to sue you and win. In this case, if Brocade caught wind of Ogre 2.1 Brocade, and if they wanted to. They have all the grounds to c&d, sue, and have a decent chance of winning (Maybe 30%-ish). I still wouldn't risk it.
As for Ogre, there are only 26 live trademarks. None of them with 3d in the name. Of those 26 only 4 are just the word 'Ogre' Of those you have a Steel company, A speaker company, a hardware company for amusement machines, and Game Piece company for parlor games. No software companies. (Wouldn't matter anyway, because Ogre is Ogre3d.)
Brocade is not a name I would touch when naming a software or networking product, because it's already the name of a 4 billion dollar company. I wouldn't name the engine Lucant, McDonalds, AT&T, KIA or any other large company name either. BRCD might be only the 3,418 largest publicly traded company. But still doesn't make that name a good idea.

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
It is a bit more complex than that. For example they may have registered the TM for IC 009 (Electrical and scientific apparatus) or IC 042 (Computer, scientific & Legal), but not for IC 041 (Education and Entertainment), or viceversa. Unless they own all of them, one could argue we fall into a category they don't own.bronzebeard wrote: You wouldn't call Ogre versions, 'Apple' or 'Google' or 'Microsoft.' Nonetheless, I agree it's an unnecessary risk when we have so many words to choose from. Besides, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is also something I want to keep in mind. I don't want someone typing the 'Brocade source code' and both our sites are in the top hits. It would only cause confusion.
Yes, though "Bronze" could imply it's inferior or beta, as we normally see silver, gold and platinum as superior, at least in western countries.mmm...Bronze is a material, isn't it?...
SEO would also suck. (I'm still having trouble with googling Apple's Metal, its SEO sucks hard)
Everyone wants a catchy, super cool, ultimate name, but it's hard to agree on one. It's very subjective. It gets worse when you realize that name is going to be thrown away for every next release. While catchy/cool is nice, priority is easy to read, to remember, to type, no or few conflicts (i.e. good SEO, no trademark issues), and shouldn't sound/look very similar to the previous' releases name (in theory having the ABC-starting-letter scheme should address this issue).

Re: Name for Ogre 2.1?
Actually it's not more complex than I said. Remember what I said in the IP offtopic thread? Anyone can sue you for any reason. The same is true for trademarks. The categories are just guidelines.dark_sylinc wrote: It is a bit more complex than that. The following comes directly from uspto.gov "How to Protect Your Trademark"
http://www.uspto.gov/sites/default/file ... cFacts.pdfTo find relatedness between goods and/or services,
the goods and/or services do not have to be identical. It is sufficient that they are related in such a
manner that consumers are likely to assume (mistakenly) that they come from a common source.
The issue is not whether the actual goods and/or services are likely to be confused but, rather,
whether a likelihood of confusion would exist as to the source of the goods and/or services.
This is why things such as Microsoft v MikeRoweSoft occur.
If we had to do materials/metals/minerals. I would lean toward gemstones. As they're prettier, and shinier than metal.
Just remember a good name is easy to pronounce and isn't too long. That's the problem with most of the names in the poll (along with being boring) to me.
You could also have the added bonus of making it the Ogre's loot. Hard to do with base minerals, easy to do with gems.
