sometimes if you wondered why something was done a specific way in ogre, you only got the answer:
"Version bump in preparation for v1.6.0RC1"
which was not very useful.
therefore I exported the old CVS to git which is now browsable on github:
https://github.com/OGRECave/ogre-attic
this ranges back to v0.99b which should give you more context.
Unfortunately the last OGRE release tracked with CVS was 1.4, so we have a gap between 1.4 and 1.6RC1 but this is tolerable for now I guess.
