So I guess I'll be asking first.
I am preparing to make a source-only release of Ogre 2.1 and 2.2
Thus we need two names, and sooner rather than later!
A few rules:
- We'll be following the 'letters' codename approach. For example Android 6.0 is M - Marshmallow. Android 7.0 is Android N - Nougat, Android 8.0 is O - Oreo, etc. Ubuntu and Debian releases follows the same convention.
- We need a common theme. For example all of Ogre 1.9 an older releases are Cthulhu references. Android uses food (confectionery) themes until 10. Ubuntu seems to have 'funky' as theme.
- The name (and theme) should be relatively easy to remember and type in western languages, and enough for non-westerners to have it easy.
Unless you'r a fan Cthulhu, these references can't be typed without having to use Google or Wikipedia.
Most Ubuntu names are just impossible to remember.
Those are a no-go.
I thought of using Greek Myhology names (e.g. 'Ares', 'Zeus') which are easy to remember and type internationally due to their popularity; but admittedly these names are very overused thus making them unoriginal (I'm not against it though). - Ogre 2.0 is A, 2.1 is B, 2.2 is C
- Avoid names that are trademarked in a similar category as Ogre, such as Class 9, 28, 41, and 42 trademarks. Trademarks are never easy to avoid entirely, but at the very least it shouldn't be in the top 10 hits in Google when you type "<name> graphics/3D/engine/render/games/simulation/virtual/system"
So, we need ideas people! If everyone agrees quickly we may just use whatever is decided, otherwise we'll make a poll on the best candidates.
