Names for Ogre 2.1 and 2.2?

Post by dark_sylinc »

Last time I tried everyone reprimanded me.

So I guess I'll be asking first.

I am preparing to make a source-only release of Ogre 2.1 and 2.2
Thus we need two names, and sooner rather than later!

A few rules:
  • We'll be following the 'letters' codename approach. For example Android 6.0 is M - Marshmallow. Android 7.0 is Android N - Nougat, Android 8.0 is O - Oreo, etc. Ubuntu and Debian releases follows the same convention.
  • We need a common theme. For example all of Ogre 1.9 an older releases are Cthulhu references. Android uses food (confectionery) themes until 10. Ubuntu seems to have 'funky' as theme.
  • The name (and theme) should be relatively easy to remember and type in western languages, and enough for non-westerners to have it easy.
Unless you'r a fan Cthulhu, these references can't be typed without having to use Google or Wikipedia.
Most Ubuntu names are just impossible to remember.
    Those are a no-go.
I thought of using Greek Myhology names (e.g. 'Ares', 'Zeus') which are easy to remember and type internationally due to their popularity; but admittedly these names are very overused thus making them unoriginal (I'm not against it though).
  • Ogre 2.0 is A, 2.1 is B, 2.2 is C
  • Avoid names that are trademarked in a similar category as Ogre, such as Class 9, 28, 41, and 42 trademarks. Trademarks are never easy to avoid entirely, but at the very least it shouldn't be in the top 10 hits in Google when you type "<name> graphics/3D/engine/render/games/simulation/virtual/system"
Back in 2016 I suggested rock-themed names due to PBS being the shiny new feature of Ogre 2.1; but it seems it wasn't well received.

So, we need ideas people! If everyone agrees quickly we may just use whatever is decided, otherwise we'll make a poll on the best candidates.

I think mythology names is a good idea but not only Greek. If any mythological god or creature can be used(greek, roman, norse, asian) you get a large amount of names to pick from.
Another option could be animal names.
Afterall, Ogre is a beast.

Some suggestions(Gods, fantasy creatures and real animals)
Baldur(Baldr, Balder), Basilisk, Bigfoot, Baboon, Beaver, Bison
Calypso, Castor, Cerberus, Chimera, Camel, Cobra, Cod

Although Ogre 2.2 Cod sounds a bit fishy

I use rock related names for all of my PCs. My last two desktops (always giant black rectangles) have been Monolith and Obelisk. My others (phones, laptops, tablets) included Basalt, Aerolith, Xenolith, Basalt, etc. I think my next desktop PC will be Megalith.

I wasn't against rock names, I just "criticized" your selection of choices for B.
Apart rocks, I'd like to suggest famous painter surnames. Since OGRE is a rendering-only engine, it can be seen like a "modern-age" entity which takes care of draw something for us (like a painter!).
Instead, I don't like at all God names: boring, over-used and too generics.

Ah good point! There's no reason to tighten the requirements too much.

Interesting!
Sweenie wrote: Mon Sep 23, 2019 7:31 am Some suggestions(Gods, fantasy creatures and real animals)
Baldur(Baldr, Balder), Basilisk, Bigfoot, Baboon, Beaver, Bison
Calypso, Castor, Cerberus, Chimera, Camel, Cobra, Cod
Baldur is too troublesome (there's Baldur's Gate, Baldur from RenderDoc, etc)
Bison is a programming language
Bigfoot can backfire
Cod is just Call of Duty.
Calypso is heavily trademarked

The rest appear to be ok! It's incredible how hard it is to chose a name!

I actually like these ones!!!
Ton of choices, most of them are easy to spell or well known, most of them non-trademarke-able.
A few of them is advisable to be avoided though: Cairo is a 2D rendering library, some cities are currently in conflict or are in political turmoil. But there's still plenty to chose.

You sir, are a pro.

Any more input?

Hmm, not pro enough to avoid listing basalt twice. :)

Just don't use coprolith, alvinolith, stercolith or fecalith. All involve hardened or fossilised crap.

This list can be handy if you want a ****lith style name: http://phrontistery.info/stone.html

OK it looks like I will have to open a poll soon first for deciding the naming theme.

So far it's:
  • Major Cities or Popular/Attraction Cities
  • Mythological Gods and Creatures
  • Rocks & Minerals

Ogre is a renderer. Renderers and graphics fundamentally deal with light and the interaction between light and matter. So my humble suggestion would be to use light phenomena as a name: Mirage, Corona, Halo etc.

I'm afraid it's late for that.

But given that mythological gods and creatures seems to be winning, point taken that perhaps we should try to pick deities/creatures related with light, arts, entertainment.
