Naming candidates for Ogre-Next 3.0

Post by dark_sylinc »

The next version of OgreNext after 2.3 will be 3.0.
This will mark a shift in the naming scheme. The details are in the Github ticket #259.

With versions >= 3.0.0 we will enforce much stronger ABI & API guarantees than what currently OgreNext does; where 3.0.x keeps 100% ABI compatibility, and 3.x.0 must to keep API compatibility >= 95% to make porting easy.

The rules for the name candidates are the same as they were Ogre 2.3.

The name must start with the letter E. As that is Ogre 3.0's codename.

I can't find many deities starting with the letter E:

  • Epimetheus
  • Erebus
  • Eos
  • Eir

I excluded "Eros" because of its potential connection to R-18 content.
I'm inclined to remove Eos from the list: a quick google shows it's heavily used by corporations and trademarks.
I'm inclined to remove Epimetheus: The name should ideally be easy to type and remember.
That would leave the list to just Erebus vs Eir.

Do you agree? Have you got other suggestions?
Once we settle we will make a poll to select the winner.

I'm more of an OGRE 1.x guy, but my vote goes to Erebus.

Erebus sounds cool.

Other candidates:

  • Echo
  • Eris
  • Electra
  • Erinyes

Eol was funny (like End-Of-Line), but after translating it to English it turned to Aeolus, so it is out.

Well if so then I'm voting for: Eris.
For me it was a lot of work to get 3.0 into Stunt Rally 3 after all.
BTW. Do we know yet which name is proper: OgreNext, Ogre Next or Ogre-Next? Seems like these 3 are rotating everytime used :) .

OgreNext makes the lowest strain on my wrist so I use it often. Ogre-Next feels more like the official name since the repo has the dash in its path, OGRE-Next is just because anciently Ogre also used OGRE (for the acronym Object Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine).
I don't think I use Ogre Next (I may have in the past but not anymore).
So... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
