I use "Avast!" because it's free, powerful, and has a cool name.

I've always avoided virus checkers; Careful usage of your computer and/or network is just as good. i.e. Don't go to "iffy" websites, turn off JavaScript on your browser (NoScript for Firefox) and don't download any software from an unknown source.

However; I was introduced to Nod32 last month, and I've found it uses less memory, much less intrusive and faster than any other virus checker I've encountered - including Avast.

I prefer my NAT router than a firewall, but unfortunately since I share this network with other people, I have to use both.

But you are right about alternate OS's; Someone try and install a trojan on my Amiga.

Hmm, I thought Security would have higher priority in a developing environment.

I use the free version of Zone-Alarm as firewall and the personal version of Antivir.

One of the vulnerabilities of Linux is that many users think it is not vulnerable to viruses.

In 2005 there were at least 863 known linux viruses.

Someone try and install a trojan on my Amiga.

Take your pick.

I use Comodo free firewall and AVG for antivirus, but I've heard that Avast is better so I've been trying it out.

I have to run student submitted software for marking, so no matter how careful I might normally be I can't assume they were just as careful. A virus scanner is needed.

I use Sophos as my Anti-Virus. Never lets me down.

Don't have a Firewall though. I had ZoneAlarm, but I got sick of having to click 'Allow' every time I wanted to do anything over the web.

I bet most of those viruses are 10-15 years old; and I very much doubt they are on any of the floppy discs I have now. Considering they are all install discs for games or applications. Either way; it's safe.

OK let me put it this way... Of the 5 years + ive been actively using linux everyday, downloading, running stuff etc, not a single time did i have something infecting my computer. And no i dont run an antivirus.

Could it be because being opensource everything gets patched daily/weekly? Maybe.. Either way yes linux gives me the confidence to say that practically im secure.

And although there might be viruses, even for amiga, a virus depends on more things other then its powers, such as user base and user knowledge. Therefor, very hard for the virus to live in the *Nix domain

I use NOD32 on my Windows laptop, and Kaspersky on my Windows desktop. My Windows laptop also has Ubuntu Linux on it, and I don't have any anti-virus on that (unless Ubuntu came with something of that sort).

Well, actually, the last 4 years I didn't use anti-virus software on my XP machine and I never had any problems...

Nod32 here. It's much less intrusive than the other common ones most people use. Works great on my workstation which is made up of mostly 4 year old components.
