IceWM - The Ultimate Window Manager!

Hey guys!

A friend of mine recommended IceWM, an X window manager. I tried it out, and I must say, its awesome. All my programs run extremely fast now, using my computer is a breeze. The only thing slowing me down now is my typing speed.

Debian has apt-get packages in the official lists, I think.

I use XCFE on my Linux laptop, I have tried IceWM but wasn't that impressed, besides I needed the RAM it used.

Hmm... It seems very fast to me, and it uses very less RAM. Perhaps thats because I used GNOME till now.

Yeah, gnome is a bit resource hungry (at least the default Debian configuration). It's still the one I use the most, because I'm lazy.

Did you try out the tabbed, keyboard-friendly WM ion?

I used it a lot with my laptop, to save screen space. Not having to reach for the mouse really boosts productivity, IMO.

I tried out wmii (an ion-like wm). Its pretty cool, but Blender doesn't work on it unfortunately.

FVWM > all.

For raw speed and resource footprint, you can't beat TWM.

Of course, ease-of-use comes with a price, and that price usually is increased memory/CPU consumption (Windows, anyone?)

Bare X itself isn't that lightweight, either.

Heh, I can program Ogre stuff on a bare terminal, but won't be able to test them.

EDIT: Well actually, after trying out many tiling window managers, I've finally settled on xmonad, with xmobar and trayer. Tiling window managers are fun.
