I hate Vista

I installed Vista last weekend...

important note for those that needs to know.
If you want vista to force a program to show a administrator varning message you need to set on of the resource ids for the project to one or maybe zero. This can be controlled trough visual studio after version 2003.

I have Vista installed, and really don't experience any performance hit.
It was horrible before SP1, compared to XP, but now I find it snazzier.
It is more responsive than XP, and prettier.

I really don't get why people are so wound up about Windows Vista.
It's only an OS!

Must admit that I only use Vista when I have to - most of the time I'm running GNU/Linux.
Gnome with Compiz is sexy!

Allow me to add an "I hate Vista" to the appropriate topic.

*ahem* I Hate Vista. I Hate Vista. I Hate Vista.

Having just spent the last 6 hours with vista intermittently dying whilst trying to install itself, with a cryptic error message that could have indicated anything: a memory error, a faulty hdd, power supply not supplying enough power, anything; after silly amounts of hardware testing I discover the random odd fault is Vista not liking to be installed off a SATA cdrom. Not my brand new one. Not the one I grabbed from my linux box which installed linux fine. It only wanted to install from an ancient IDE cdrom I dragged out of an old carcass I had in the cupboard.

I'm guessing the only reason MSHQ hasn't been made a glassy radioactive wasteland is because no-one wants to accidentally trigger WW3?

Mine's even older. I have a 1.5 GB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce FX 5600!

I finally installed Vista Ultimate, havent used vista at all since Beta 2 expired. Runs WAY better than XP. If you have a reasonably modern GPU. In my case a 7800GS AGP the UI is very responsive compared to XP even with all the fancy stuff and collapsing windows etc.

I did install and extra GB of ram since I last ran vista, because I wanted better load times in The Witcher when playing on XP. I expect that made one of the biggest differences.

Vista uses a lot more ram than XP because it tracks what programs you use most frequently and over time preloads many into ram in the background for fast access.

Was a bit worried that it might be slow since my CPU is single core and clocked at 2ghz. It seems the video card is the important factors for the aero desktop and new visual effects.

Try running it on an AMD2000+ processor with 1 Gb of RAM, with a Geforce TI4200 video card and then see if it is comparable or faster than XP.

Although, I think of it as a challenge. If I can get my programs to run well on this system, then they should be blindingly fast on anyones rig (by todays standards).

Vista uses your ram by design, dynamicly filling it up with software you use most speeding up loading times and responsiveness. It's called superfetch and on by default.

If you only have 1GB of ram then you should probably turn it off. That way it will run just like the XP your more familiar with.

Around here good ram is roughly $10 per GB sometimes cheaper, so 2GB really isn't the big expense it was a few years ago. Same with HD space, I just bought a 500GB SATA 2 for $69 and 320GB sata 2 for $46 last month.

The Geforce 4 isn't going to help much either ;P. Honestly, Vista is really quite good with a mid level system from 3/4 years ago with a bunch of extra ram.

Our buy price from the wholesaler for RAM at the moment is around $50 (AUD) per GB. The US dollar has not helped us at all in that regard. A couple of months ago it was half that as our dollar matched the US dollar. I think it got to about 97c at that stage.

Might still be time to upgrade soon.

Add another GB of ram and it probably isn't slower than XP. At least that is my experience.

As a crazy experiment, I have just loaded Vista onto a really slow machine. I have disabled a whole bunch of services and have it booting up at the moment using only 253Mb of RAM. It is actually pretty responsive.

This is what I have it running on right as we speak (or type

)

AMD Duron 1000Mhz (133 FSB)
512Mb RAM
GeForce FX5200 (128Mb)
120Gb IDE HDD (7200RPM)

What I hate most about vista is that the windows are rounded and doesn't have proper outlines. So I have to take an extra close look to tell them apart if I have many windows and that really annoys me.

No one prevents you from using the classic theme, which will make them look like the ones in Windows 2000.

Only problem I have with vista so far is that Wacom decided to drop support for my 12 year old serial tablet. Managed to get it working with a reg hack, except in photoshop where pen pressure doesn't work

Adobe must be getting the tablet data from somewhere different than other apps because pressure works in other apps like Corel Painter.

Discovering a lot of cool things in vista, even normaly hidden functions like services, msconfig, start ups are easily accessible straight from the UI, windows defender lets you find out what the rundll tasks are. And even the UAC.

I even find the UAC popups helpfull, plus vistas firewall can block traffic in both directions where XP only worked with incoming data.

Being an artist and a bit messy, I really like how copying duplicate files to a new folder. The overwrite dialogue shows you thumbnails of your textures as well as other data. So you know what version of a file your overwriting

Works with other datatypes too, not just images.

Tons of small things add up to a worthy upgrade for me. Just wish photoshop would behave, going to have to get a used USB Wacom intuos from somewhere now.

I really enjoy using vista on my machine at work. I threw it on my laptop again, for the third time, and the experience sucked. The wireless connection goes out randomly at times, and my fn key doesn't work that well. These are most likely driver issues so not necessarily ms' fault. Looks like my laptop is destined to work on xp. I'll probably upgrade laptops when windows seven comes out, I'm betting it will be really awesome.

The most irritating experience on vista is when trying to delete a folder with numerous files. Vista will try to calculate all of the files needing to be deleted, and this can take several minutes, just to ask you if you want to delete x number of files totalling y bytes. You can't shift+delete a folder and walk away.

huh... my new pc has four 2.4GHz cores and 4 GB of 1333 DDR3 RAM (at the moment).

do you know any OS (compatible with games) that would utilise my a hardware other than x64 vista? I'm having a business edition, so I've installed it in dual boot with xp on the same license, beacouse vista is for games only (and business edition is for remote terminal service only, to be honest)

SP1 supposedly fixed the issue I mentioned above, but it didn't..

But overall I think I'll be sticking with vista and not going back to xp anymore, despite some issues with my laptop (due to drivers).
