Weirdness of TGC forums..

Post by scratchyrice »

Wow, Media has really got to them. They all seem to have the following, weird idealisms:
1. According to them, Linux is a complete peice of c**p, And they truly believe games cannot be run on it. The instant i give screenshots etc, they just turn them away, or say im using a theme etc.

2. According to them, The following Image is far superiour in graphical quality, than that made in ogre, using hydrax and the like, such as my engine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZvznLw1 ... annel_page.

3. Apparently windows is more secure than linux.

Is it me, or are they just a bunch o noobs? lol.

Lol I really don't know. They all claim they're like 18-25, But half of them ive later found out they are 14-16 years of age. And alot of them have socal network accounts, which all have diffrent ages. They are some odd people.

Yes they are just noobs.

But that's fine as far as they keep being noob in their noob forum.
Their noob-attitude will burn their eyes to tear once one of them try to learn what is outside their noob cavern.
That not-noob-anymore guy will then try to convince them that outside their is truth and knowledge about all they feared and made mythos of.
But he will be rejected, like you.

Oh wait, someone already wrote about that...

Which TGC are we talking about?
I've just been searching around on the The Game Creators forums for mentions of oceans or linux, and there's a heap of positive linux support and I couldn't find any recent mention of ogre or putting down of ocean shaders.

Heh, the good old Dark Basic :) Reminds me of FPS creator, Game Studio, etc. They all could be good, but one needs to realise, they are only *basics* and there is a larger world out there. Don't know if that's just me getting old, but the current generation of people using those tools are way more... arrogant (let's try to be literate here ;)) than people just 10 years ago. Might be that's the reason we see most of the talented young people jumping into advanced things straight away and thus achieving results, which TGC'ers cannot even dream of. But, that's just life. And yeah, they are a bunch of noobs
According to them, Linux is a complete peice of c**p, And they truly believe games cannot be run on it.
That's true. When I see huge gaming centres running Linux + Wine/Cedega, I just feel like running in there and shouting "N00BS, WINDOWS PWNED U!!!"

EDIT: @Kojack: just to get an idea, search for General Reed's posts in the forums. To make it short - a lot of the discussions are pretty fun to read.

My college uses Dark Basic for it's game design course (the programming course doesn't touch it, we use c++, c#, lua and ogre).
But for 2d stuff, I think those students would be better off with my HGE+Lua framework, especially since Lua skills can be used is so many games these days, but DB coding skills aren't as common.

Hehe, I feel like jumping into that X3 thread and pointing out that real men play Orbiter, not X3 or Evochron.
That might not go down well as a first post though. :)

The first moon landing recreated in Orbiter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS5HYznzw-k
(handy bit of knowledge I just picked up from youtube: moon landing conspiracy videos are more enjoyable in spanish (which I don't know) than english. They make just as much sense, but at least I can pretend they are saying something intelligent)

Hehe, How do you know my TGC callname?

It always happens when im in an msn convo with one of the dbpro/dsgk'ers. The instant i mention something that is not microsoft, or TGC they go beserk.
Orbiter
Lol, I do know know of this game. I shall check it out. But notice how in that thread, suddenly evechron is the king, simply because it was made using DB lol.

Well, that's typical idolism for you... Needless to say Orbiter is very nice, but one always must try to be objective, rather than subjective. :D

(Yay, my cunning trick to steer the topic to space sims worked!)
:)

Evochron is a damn good game, but so is X3 and X3 Terran Conflict. IWar 2 still beats them all though.

Orbiter is pretty freaky. It's space flight is the most realistic of any sim. It's like the X-Plane of space. It's free, there's a big mod community, and it's pretty unforgiving to play. If you want to see what the current reality of space flight is like for real astronauts, give this a try. Don't turn on the accelerated time button and it will really take days to fly from the earth to the moon (or months to mars).
It's gfx engine is now a separate dll and the sdk lets you replace it, one day I'll get back to porting it to ogre. :)

Back to the actual topic... those google adbot posts on the TGC forum are annoying. Normal google ads on sites are annoying enough, but when bots can make posts in the middle of threads...

We don't need you anyway. ;)

Not being able to run Windows programs isn't a valid 'bad' feature of Linux. You can't run Linux programs that easily either (many are cross-platform, but that's a different issue). Probably Windows for gaming - Linux for everything else is the best setup one can get.

Yeah. TGC care about one thing. Money. Like, the so called "awesome" fps creator x10, Is just the old rubbish fps creator, but with a dx10 rendering engine. Its just as slow, and if not slower on most machines.

Thats what i love about ogre. It's more powerful, More flexable, More up to date, Has alot less bugs than TGC (I havent actualy come across any so far), And its free!

Agreed. What they seem to think tho, is that Linux actually has no 3d capabilities. As soon as i showed them the 3d cube desktop for ubuntu, they just dismissed it as if it were never there lol. They also don't believe that Quake 4 is available for Linux, and as soon as i give them a link they just say "Oh well open gl is crap". Why do people put themselves through such embarrassment?

Come on, nikki, I thought that was obvious from my post, that I was ironic. The reality is as follows: certain people actually prefer having machines run Linux with Cedega for gaming, rather than having native Windows installation. Doesn't that tell us something about Linux stability?
As for the "N00BS, WINDOWS PWNED U!!!" bit - I was just parodying the style you often see on their forums (and especially IRC/MSN/Skype/etc. chats).
scratchyrice wrote:Why do people put themselves through such embarrassment?
Why? That is the question... But what is the answer? I guess that is just a natural biological behaviour, when they see something as a hypothetical threat, they try to run away or hide, and ignorance works perfectly here. After all, haven't we all read about the life during Middle Ages?

Lol indeed.

I forgot to mention, a group of them claim that for them, windows NEVER goes wrong, and that linux is always crashing. What a load of BS lol.

Do not underestimate the power of the n00b! :)
They can make Linux crash all day long.
Especially if they log in as root.

It's a bit like Firefox vs. Internet Explorer fights...

Honestly, when I tried to use Firefox, some years ago when it was really hyped that everyone should use it, I used it for a couple of weeks, maybe even several months, and it crashed daily! It didn't matter which website I was using, it crashed on any website I could go to. And all other programs on my computer were not crashing at all.

Then I got many people telling me that Firefox doesn't crash, doesn't have buffer over-runs (I think *all* the crashes I had were *exactly* buffer over-runs), doesn't leak memory, et cetera obvious bullshit when I had it crashing *every day* and usually when I had just written a long forum post and didn't submit it yet. It is the program which made me write long posts in some other program and copy&paste it to the browser.

Then, a *fact* was that Internet Explorer had *never* crashed on my Windows XP! Can you imagine? It never crashed. And then I had all those people telling me how Internet Explorer *sucks* and Firefox *rocks*... ha-ha.

Before I gave up with it I tried some version updates but they had similar buffer over-run crashes. Needless to say I stopped using Firefox completely as I could not trust it at all anymore after those daily crashes despite of getting version updates.

And now that I posted about it here, someone will come and tell me that Firefox hasn't crashed on their computer. And that I should try newer versions. And that it is really extensible and great and, and. And. Yes, yes. Good for you. Let me tell you, I don't trust that project anymore. They had their chance and they totally lost it.

Now, let's clear one thing up. I am not a fan of any web browser. I just don't care about being a fan of a browser, I think it's uninteresting. I just want one that works and doesn't crash. Firefox obviously wasn't that browser.

The "fanboyism" is really bad, if you are unable to control it, it ruins a lot of discussions. Not just about computer hardware and software, but for example sports discussions go similarly down the toilet when fanboyism raises its ugly head. Think about football hooligans. Think about them writing about which web browser is the best in similar fashion as they go and support their favourite football team.

rant over :)

I agree. There is one argument against IE I hear often, and tend to think it's righteous though - IE has a huge market share, hence it is the privileged target of various exploits. This is slowly changing as Firefox is gaining popularity though. Best option is to run the browser sandboxed, any of them, I think. Any kind of separation helps (And not browsing to various bad pages is a must).

Also, let's face it. I'm a daily user of Linux myself, yet I'd still say gaming on linux sucks. It's mainly because the games are not working, and if so, very slowly. I'd like to play my copy of Bioshock or Dead Space on wine yet I can't. I put my hopes into the new graphics stack - The Tungsten Graphics's Galium3D - it could deliver DirectX API for linux in cooperation with wine.

Didn't try nowadays (Tried svn build of cedega some 2 years ago, but the games I wanted did not work).I expect the 3D performance to be bad as with wine because of the API call translation.

Edit: But to be fair I'd expect this kind of support from the game producer, not a third party. Why this does not happen is transparent - producer-consumer deadlock :) I say wine won't be able to overcome this deadlock till the 3d support of DX9 is flawless. And it could be, with Gallium3D. Hardly with the OpenGL translation which eats up precious processing time.
