A castle..

Post by Crashy »

mh, I don't really know what is this section for, so I'll give screenshots of the castle I'm making for my game, maybe it can give inspiration to other ones.
The screenshotes weren't made at the same time, so there is somme differences, and don't look at the background, it only was to make the scene less dark.
Screnshots rendered by Ogre are coming soon! :)

Note that I try to have less thant 15000 polys, and it's not very easy(even with the optimize modifier).

I use 3Dsmax! I've just exported the mesh, but I didn't test it. I'll do this tomorrow! :)

Running this through a BSP compiler will get you better FPS ...

52k polys for that small part of the castle. The polycount for your mesh's way too high. Try simplifying it down..

mmh, no, it's al the scene!

The Castle has only 13500 polys.

I must say that my computer is quite old(400mhz and Gf2Mx400 PCI)
I can grab many FPS when I choose 800*600 instead of 1024*769! More than I thougt. :)

Thx for the compliments. :)

This is quite old screenshots, and the graphics have been a little bit improved.

For those screens, I used the defaukt Terrain Scene Manager, and the terrain texture was made with this tool(very easy to use). www.delphigl.de/projects/terrtexgen.html
The heightmap was made with Bryce, but you can do it with every painting software.

Now I use the Paging Landscape of Spoke, and Terragen (www.planetside.co.uk/terragen ) to make textures.

me again

Post by tomaso4 »

Thanks for all the advice, it all worked out very well. I spent a little while acquainting myself with the tools and made a few good heightmaps, I especially like terragen and its editor abilities.

But now you have awesome looking grass, and I envy that too :-p

how'd you do it?

oh and I have one more question, something i completely forgot about before. I have some trees, most of which are between 20,000 and 100,000 faces each. I made these using different tools which model trees for you. But lets face it, i don't think any tree is worth that many polys heh. Short of designing the trees myself (which i will be attempting this week) do you have any other pointers? Also, I'd love to hear more about your project, I went to the homepage you gave back in a previous post but i believe it was in french, which might as well be greek, or latin, or german, because I don't understand it :)

Ogre Shot, of course.

It is taken with a 400mhz -Geforce2MX400 PCI (32 mo) and 256 sdr PC 133, in 1024*768 with AA 2X and I get 2FPS  It's quite low, but I'm still searching a way to optimize it.

Now, I'll have an Athlon 64 3200+ with a X800pro, and I don't know how many FPS I can get with such a pc.

I'm back, and I still don't have my X800 pro :x
But now you have awesome looking grass, and I envy that too :-p
To do this grass, I downloaded a free model of grass on www.3dplants.com

Then, I made a 2D view rendering under 3DSMax, to get an alpha blended texture. I created a X-like mesh with two planes, and I applied the texture to get what you see :)
I have some trees, most of which are between 20,000 and 100,000 faces each. I made these using different tools which model trees for you.

You used what tool? I'm starting to use XFrog 3.5&Xfrog tunes, wich are sharewares(I use the trial version to see how it works, and if it is useful)
www.xfrogdownloads.com
The models I get are between 75-120 000 polys :s

I think I'll make an english version of my web page, it will take a few time, but I wait for my Graphic Card, so I've all the time I need :D
Edit: ok, I've created an English board for the forum http://antharia.free.fr/forum

Just notice that I'm not a good programmer, but I try to do as much as possible to improve rendering and to simplify the programmation of the game.

Post by tomaso4 »

thanks a ton Crashy, I've tried alpha textures to no avail before, if you find anytime to email me a little bit more information on how to do it, that'd be great. all this modelling is still very very new to me and there's just so much to know :)

Oh, and I'm interested in how your game comes out too, so drop me a line from time to time when you get new screenshots and new info. I'll send you back one from my game the second it looks more presentable :-P

well, here's a small picture of the laboratory:

Not so bad, I do like the style :)

Here is a little screen with a little grass emprovement, but the sky texture has dissapeared while loading the grass. My old GeForce is near to die

Ok for sending you some helps and infos about the game, this is really no a problem :)

I am starting out with Ogre and need some grass / tree samples to start with.

Is it possible for you to share Ogre code and textures for a scene like this:

thank you.

Wow, happy to know many peoples look at my webpage :)

Textures: I've found the grass on google image, so I think I can give a link to it(if I refind it. I have the image on my HD otherwise)

The trees are from sputnick program.

the most I can share is my little programm wich helps me to load a huge number of objects and position them easily, and the armor shader(not very optmised, from ShaderWorks and integrated with Kuranes Help).
