Ogre poly count?

Post by Clean3d »

What's a good polygon count for Ogre to use? I'm making models for my game right now and have a soldier that's approx. 800-900 faces and a vehicle that's going to be no more than 1500 faces. Are these an okay number?

Thanks!

That should be plenty low. My game will be using at least 3 times as many as that, so if you can make them at 800-900 and they look good, more power to ya.

The subject of poly count all comes down to what you want your minimum specs to be.

There's a bit more to it than that. Such as average poly count per object (lots of little objects are bad compared to few big objects), how they are displaced around the scene (ie: how many of the objects are likely to be drawn each frame and how many can be culled), are they static or dynamic (big speed increase from batching static objects), etc.

Don't forget the Level of Detail material property! No sense in rendering thousands of polys when an object is so far away that 100-200 will do. :)

Remember that very low poly have problems too. You will need to use StaticGeometry. (search this word too)
Works:
MapToMesh | Bengine B9 @ www.sourceforge.net/projects/maptoogremesh/

Depending on what your game is going to be is how high you should set your max amount of polys to.
Example:

MMORPG- it's a good idea to keep the poly count down as much as possible so 800-900 would be perfect.
(You don't want 2000 poly characters all in one town at the same time, otherwise it'd be crazy)

A 2 Player- If you wanted you could have 2000 poly count on a character.

Now For vehicles-
Racing Game- I've seen it done with 8,000 and in the programming it can lower the poly count.

MMORPG- 1500 Poly count is very good and you can get alot of detail into that.

The main thing that will make your Models look very good even with a low poly count is the texture. If you can make a very good texture and don't just skim through everything, actually perfect the models with their skin, then you'll have a pretty sweet looking game. (Engine is a very important thing to making the models look good aswell)

Well that's all I can remember that I was gonna say.
