when I use the smooth setting for my models I get weird normal problems at the edges of the model. In the engin the lighting is reversed in thoese spots (dark side is lite and lite side is black.

I have no idea what causes this and could use all the help I can get=p

Also is there a way to set and export sub meshes in blender without adding a material?

check your normal vector in 3D program...If you use maya...should check set to face before exporting to ogre to sure about the right direction of normal vector

another thing is to make sure you have "double sided" un-checked on your model in blender, and then make sure the normals are pointing in the right direction (with the show normals option).
