The meaning of life

Post by Walley »

I'm in a bit of an odd, playful, and curious mood, so...

I figured I'd quite enjoy perusing the perspectives on life everyone here has. In essence what I'd vote for is if you're interested, just post a reply with your own perspective on what you believe / think the meaning of life to be (including thinking / believing that it has none).

Considering that this is a potentially volatile topic, I would venture that there's no harm in justifying thoughts and beliefs (as besides being curious about views, I love to investigate them if there's substance to them) - but no debating please. Post yours if you're up for it, enjoy others, but leave arguing about it alone.

And, for now at least, I'm going to leave my own perspectives out of the picture - I have an inkling that it would start the thread in the wrong way :).

Enjoy the moment, reach for your goals don't be afraid and don't give up.

Don't let other people live your life. That means don't let other people tell you what to do, decide for yourself based on others input but do the final descision by yourself. (Thats for people that are not really important to you, your girlfriend/wife/boyfriend/husband should get extra consideration)

Other people that try to tell you what to do must have a really boaring life feeling the need to live someone elses.

Don't strive for pure academic excelense showing on paper, strive for pratical knowledge that you can use and will use. Don't strive for the money trap, it will feed you and give you stuff but if you loose yourself you might lose the stuff thats important and you really want to do.

Album: Ixnay On The Hombre

Song: The Meaning Of Life

On the way
Trying to get where I‘d like to stay
I‘m always feeling steered away
By someone trying to tell me
What to say and do
I don‘t want it
I gotta go find my own way
I gotta go make my own mistakes
Sorry man for feeling
Feeling the way I do
On yeah, Oh yeah
Open wide and they‘ll shove in
Their meaning of life
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
But not for me I‘ll do it on my own
Oh yeah, Oh yeah
Open wide and swallow their meaning of life
I can‘t make it work your way
Thanks but no thanks
By the way
I know your path has been tried and so
It may seem like the way to go
Me, I‘d rather be found
Trying something new
And the bottom line
In all of this seems to say
There‘s no right and wrong way
Sorry if I don‘t feel like
Living the way you do

That sums it up :)

life has no meaning , why should it ?

we live, we die, that's it, people ascribe meaning to life because their pathetic little egos won't allow them to accept the fact that none of us are anything particularly special, just one of millions of carbon based lifeforms clinging to a rock whizzing through space. In the grand scheme of things we are no more important than the most basic single celled organism, why should our lives have any meaning at all ?

I think we're just a part of a big experiment to calculate the meaning of life. ;)

* Life has no purpose except replicate itself. Without it the branch disappear.

* The life meaning for you only depends on what you put in it.

* For the Life Goal or Ultimate Purpose as I am agnostic I think we don't have the answers for it. I hope that when scientists explain where the Big Bank came from we will get a beginning of an answer.

Any more thinking about it is a lose of time... play a game it will be more rewarding.

PS: Agnostic != Gnostic (believer or atheist)

To create. Some say that's how God's nature is and as such it's in our nature too. Maybe:)

I think we should create, build and develop until we perfect ourselves and everyone around us:)

Glad to see the thread has turned out interesting :).

Personally I have the perspective of all being within a realm of infinite consciousness - ourselves in particular (where by 'ourselves' I refer to all that we really are, regardless of your world view - awareness/consciousness (question being from where does that arise, but let's leave that alone as it's debate prone :))). Essentially, I view each of us as individual ripples of consciousness upon the surface of the ocean of infinite consciousness. Of course I cannot be sure of this view (what can we be sure of when you really think about it? I can count the things on one hand...), but like anyone, it is the conclusion I have come to based on my own experiences thus far. Note that I mainly say this due to wariness that some may perceive it as me attempting to hijack (or even originally create) the thread as a means to preach my own world view - which it isn't :).

But anyway, my own perspectives aside - I think the most important frontier of all has yet to be breached, and that is the simple question of where/why/how awareness arises - if it arises at all. It seems to me that discovering that so much of our mind is in the brain merely gives the illusion of coming closer to solving our own natures, when we are in fact only the awareness/consciousness (which possibly arises from the brain - though that is an entirely open question at present) which watches and instigates our mind functions/thoughts - rather than the functions/thoughts themselves (which we can observe, and are hence separate from). The only alternative I know of is the argument of consciousness/awareness being an illusion... but that's basically down the roads of 'do I exist?' - which is pretty much a senseless question in my view, as the answer is staring you in the face so to speak.

Note that I don't mean to start any debate here - I've purposely stuck with items without bias and which pretty much can't be argued - I feel safe in vouching that the above paragraph is an unbiased 'matter of fact' commentary :P. That said I'm more than open to any criticism of my above statements, so long as it's kept in the realm of friendliness.

@Walley
Wow!
I thought my views with regards to the meaning of life were complicated (yeah, I know it's 42, but still..), but you surely have even a more complicated view...
Anyway, since this is something I was thinking about while waiting for yet-another-compilation, I guess there's no harm in sharing.
IMO, there is a distinct difference between the awareness/consciousness/mind and the brain are pretty much different (i.e. it might be possible at some point to sustain our consciousness without having our brain). However, one thought that arises here - is whether the brain is necessary to keep our consciousness (i.e. no brain=no consciousness = final death = whatever :)) or whether the brain is only needed to help our consciousness (read our true selves) receive the input from the world around us (whether consciousness belongs to this world or not is another debate). Hence the fact that we have a so-called subconsciousness, which may be referred to as simply our brain acting without accessing our consciousness.
One way I like to think about it all is with the example of AIs. Lets think of the brain as a powerfull computer with CPU/GPU (or in our case MovementPU, LanguagePU, SensesPU, Basic_functionsPU, etcPU), with RAM (our short-term memory), SSD/HDD (long-term memory), etc. With this all, we a have a basic OS, which runs the hardware, plus the I/O devices (i.e. that is all your body parts), but it functions on a pretty low-level state. Then, atop of that, we have our consciousness - which simply overrides necessary functions of the original OS API, and provides us with the high-level functionality. And there we have our subconsciousness - i.e. the original OS performing something, whilst not being overriden by the high-level consciousness. This can be used to explain behaviour which occurs with the consumptions of drugs, alcohol, etc., which means that certain functions simply stop being overriden by the high-level app, thus making the individual acting "weird".
Abviously, such a setup might likely require to have some backup mechanics, which might either be "one off" (i.e. just before the brain gets destroyed, the info can be sent off to some "backup server"), or it might be constant (i.e. having some wireless connection to the central server (or the abovementioned "realm of infinite consciousness"), thus explaining such phenomenas, as "thoughts reading" or ability to predict future or ability to feel what some other person is doing, etc.)
Anyway, I could go on and on, as it is a very interesting topic and gives you a relief from constant programming/designing/modelling/whatever_else. Also, if we'll get to some conclusion here, I got an idea for the next one - how did we end up on this planet? (some tips: try studying ancient civilizations, there are lots of things we could learn from them ;)

I pretty much agree with the view on the meaning of life that is described in the Principia Discordia ;)

I think its about being more human than machine. Humans are different from each other. That's what makes 'em humans. Machines are not. You give the same input into how many ever copies of machines, they'll come out with the same result, even if its wrong. Humans generally come out with different results (unless they're doing it in a mechanical (machine) way, like Math).

Unlike machines, which just have a procedure to do something, we humans have a procedure to make a procedure to do something. Once this procedure is tried and tested, we put it in machines. Calculators for example, just implement addition. But solving a brain teaser is out of its scope. We think of the procedure first, and use the calculator merely as a a tool to do the mechanical (ie, 'same', not 'different') parts.

Don't waste your time practicing something mechanical. That's what machines are for. Use 'em.

So, basically, you have to be different. But what do you do? Now, before you start searching for something different, something no one has ever done before, the answer is within you. Its what you want to do. Nature has made us such that, what we want is bound to be different from what another wants.

Sure, you have to do what others want you to do, and what you 'have' to do, but then, you only achieve true happiness when you're satisfied that you've done what you wanted to do. Ultimately, its your life. Live it. Don't let others do that for you. ;)

Now, take the example of any one you consider 'successful' (well, everyone is, in a way, but you get the point). At first, you might think that his procedure was good. But further analysis might show simply that his procedure was different. So don't copy his procedure, but copy the fact that he did something different.

I'm not very good with real-life examples, but anyway, if you consider Edison to be an awesome fellow, would he be that awesome if he simply copied Einstein?

Basically, if you're thinking about what you should do, then you're wrong, because you're contaminating that with logic. What you should do really comes to you. Just like that.

Hmm... Now reading what I just typed, it seems it made no sense. :?
