), and I haven't been able to successfully update the drivers yet. Here's everything I've tried so far:I checked System->Administrator->Hardware Drivers and there was nothing listed. So then I went to ATI's website and downloaded the drivers to install myself, since I've never used Linux and this is how I would do it in Windows. It took several attempts using different things to get it to work, but finally "sudo sh ./<drivers package> --buildandinstallpkg Ubuntu/jaunty" got them installed. When I applied them and rebooted, Ubuntu crashed during boot up and I had to roll back the drivers to the default.
Then a friend recomended envyNG to install the drivers, so I got that and tried it. When envyNG installed the drivers, not only did Ubuntu crash while booting again, but it locked up and I couldn't get in to Ubuntu anymore. Since I had just installed Ubuntu and it didn't take that long, I just reinstalled it and tried again from scratch. This time I started with envyNG, but now the drivers it's finding it says are not recomended OR compatible, so I didn't install them.
Ultimately I'm trying to get a Windows game to run using Wine, but I need to upgrade my video drivers before it will work. I'm completely stumped at this point, and was hoping some of youz guyz who have been using Linux from the whomb and probably rewrite the kernel for fun might have some ideas. This is in preparation for my new computer I'm building soon to see if I can use Ubuntu and still play my Windows games, or if I need to just go ahead and get Vista.
I tried posting on the Ubuntu forums, but I haven't gotten any response. Unfortunately it only takes about 5 minutes for a thread to get pushed off the page there.
. The bad news is that you will have to reinstall Ubuntu to roll back to the previous version. May I also suggest, if you have not done so already, that you create a separate partition for your /home directory, this way you will automatically retain all personal data if you have to reinstall Ubuntu again (you can also share the home partition if you ever want multiple distributions of Linux installed). This is done easily by choosing to manually partition during the installation process. I recommend a 20 GB (10 GB will do if you are short on space) partition mounted to the root "/", a swap partition equal to 2x your RAM (1x is fine if you need the space, 2x is probably just being excessive
