External HDD Problems

I have a 160 GB External HDD that we've been using for...oh, 5 years now. Windows says it has about 115 GB free, but when I try to copy a 9 GB .zip file to it, it tells me there's not enough space on the drive. I've tried disk cleanup and degragmenting, but it still won't let me move the file. Any ideas? This is an old computer, and I don't have enough space on my C: drive to unzip the file.

Are you sure your HDD is formatted with NTFS and not FAT32 ? because FAT32 only allows filesizes up to 4 GB and Windows might complain about your 9 GB file then.
If that's not the problem, then try moving the file instead of copying, WinXP and older versions sometimes have the habbit of creating a temporary duplicate of the copied file during the process, so that could cause the error as well maybe.

It is FAT32. That would explain why it had no problem copying the 14 GB WoW folder over, since none of its files are greater than 3 GB. Moving the WoW folder off my C: drive freed up enough room to extract the zip, so I found a workaround. I was just stumped by that. Thanks for the explination!
