So Intel invented another way to connect everything on our desk together...only this one runs at 10Gbps and the cables can go 100m.

I'd like it, to be honest...like, now (he says, eyeing all the cable clutter on/under the desk...)

Light Peak is pretty damn interesting. Potentially every digital connection could be replaced by it.
They have plans for carrying copper wires too for powering devices.

Sound like a good replacement for USB; it would be nice to have a cable just going to the monitor then it acting as a hub, all my peripherals can come out of that.

Since the cable can work at such long distances, and is so thin and flexible, it could allow me to move my noisy computer to somewhere on the other side of the house - without a bazillion wires coming out of it.

Utilizing a codec developed by NHK, the video was compressed from 24 Gbit/s to 180–600 Mbit/s...

Am I missing something? How is this better than a glorified USB?
As if was not enough with DVI, USB, Firewire, HDMI, and all other connectors that has fallen out of favor.
Who cares if its fiber optic or a digital electric signal, its still is a cable, and in the end it will transmit the same signal.

I know it will be faster and it will replace USB but how it this a technological advance?
And how do we know motherboard makers will give up on USB and firewire?
Hey we still have the old IBM PS2 for mouse and keyboards.

This 'peaks' is certainly a good news because :
the stream seems big and stable, and can be send over long distances.

Firewire : costly and short cables.
USB : depends a lot on the CPU. variation in the rate accross the vendors. Less interesting IMO.
CameraLink : professional only, costly and short cables.
DVI : never used myself.
HDMI : commercial only .
HD-SDI : professional only, costly.
My personnal choice : ethernet can already be used at 10Gbits (with professional hardware only if you want to do real time industrial computer vision application). It is very low cost compared to other solution, and comes with simple solutions for fiber optics.
