You don't have to install Stylish, there is a GreaseMonkey version as well. Which may would in some versions of Chrome as well. B

To to make this thread semi-useful I have a collection of other stylish css addons to stylise the forum on that website. Just click on my name in there to find them. ;)

This is one of the finest Ogre moments I've encountered in a very, very long time.
Thank you so much for letting me be the centre of that attention.

This really reminds me of the reason why I've kept being here.
Never ceases to amaze me how great the Ogre community is.

Thanks a lot for being great! :)

I installed it, forgot about it, saw jacmoes red name and thought he had returned as a mod. :( This script invokes disappointment.

Ok, now I have read it.
Jacmoe, please stop being such a drama queen. :P

If you have real reasons to do this, then fine, if you want to: name them, else just say you won't.
But to use a silly discussion over meaningless stuff as a cover-up, this is not good style.

I am still too furious to even attempt an honest answer to what you're saying, but I don't call a moderator attacking another moderator a silly discussion.
That's not a good style in my book.
But since I seem to be the only one holding that particular book, I'll have to let you wait on my answer - tomorrow, maybe?
I've had a lot of silly discussions here, I think I can handle a silly discussion just fine.
Until later.

Not the right issue, guy. Concessions were made in an attempt to defuse it... that amounts to an unspoken apology.
Look at it like driving... you can be right, and sometimes by yielding to the wrong party you avoid being right dead.
Save that enthusiasm and emotion for a substantive new issue that will undoubtedly arrive soon.

For the record, I assume jacmoe demoted himself in protest since I didn't do it. Jacmoe remains a highly valued member of our community, by me personally and by the rest of the team.

But, this issue should have been defused by both sides far earlier than it was, and the result is that I'm likely to kill off the Lounge forum now; clearly even moderators can sometimes be susceptible to the inflammatory subjects it allows. I don't think it serves any positive purpose anymore and seems to just foment polarising issues.

Moderators, and indeed all senior members of the community (if they care about it), should consider it their responsibility to defuse conflict in the forums as soon as possible regardless of personal opinion. I have nothing but respect for all our community members here, but the fact is you're not all going to see eye-to-eye in absolutely every situation. That's life, and that's people. It's up to all of us to find a mature & civil way to handle that, or to step away from the keyboard until we can.

The lounge is mostly okay, it's just the controversial and political stuff that causes the problem. IMO it should be made a rule that political discussions or topics that encourage flaming should not be allowed at all.

I'd vote for the same. It's nothing bad to have a place to be able to share almost everything with the community, but topics / discussions that are likely to disturb the peaceful conversation here, should be prohibited, such as political or religious themes. If there are clear rules, the moderators can try to prevent any flame wars right away. But it's up to you, sinbad.

EDIT: If you want to leave the choice up to the community, make a survey...

I agree, a strict ban of political and religious discussions should solve the issue just as well.
The lounge forum has brought us many interesting, funny, informative, entertaining, ... topics so far, and these are always good to get a short break of all the serious developer business, I for one, would miss it :)

(btw, I installed the stylish style as well, I just realized what has happend by reading this topic yesterday, I'm still trying to lift my jaw from the floor)

I have nothing much to add, that I agree that political and religious threads should be banned. We all live from different corners of the Earth so our opinions are bound to be in direct conflict with each other.

Instead, let's talk about things we have in common instead.

BTW: I updated the script again. I believe I have Jacmoe's old avatar working by abusing the CSS after and before tags. Give it a try!

The problem is that 'inflammatory' is rather subjective. One man's healthy debate is another man's offensive content. And the fact is, we've had rules since the start and they didn't do any good in this case, they were clearly ignored when common sense should have said that thread should have been locked down several pages ago. I'm pretty disappointed that moderators were caught up in that.

How long does the list have to be to cover everything that could lead to slanging matches when a blanket "be polite and respectful to each other" didn't work? No politics, no religeon, no cultural references?

I'm happy to trial it again by deleting all the crappy threads and with the 'any subject' moniker turned off, but at the end of the day it's up to the community to respect and police the boundaries. This isn't kindergarten, we shouldn't have to scold people when they're cranky to bring them up short, we should all be acting like adults. Subject filters might help avoid these things, but the fact is it should never have happened at all. Any number of people in that thread could have seen the writing on the wall and called in me or someone else to shut it down, rather than letting it run on to a poisonous conclusion.

I fully agree, but I believe that most persons that usually would have called you or another mod soon enough, were not following the thread exactly because of its topic. Tbh I don't read threads discussing political/religious topics at all, because they always end up like what we've seen now once again. It was "bad luck" that only two moderators were reading/posting in the thread, if a third mod would have seen this issue rising, he would have definately intervened, I suppose.

Jacmoe, thanks for your long history of exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable forum posts. Many of which I have personally benefited from. I hope that one off-topic thread "gone bad", fueled on by what seem to be a couple misunderstandings, does not change this, because then it's the Ogre community that loses.

Awwww, no more good cop to go with the bad? Xavier won't even know what to do without a yang to his ying ;). jacmoe, you've always been a gentleman and a scholar. Have a beer on me. Mistakes only turn into regrets if you never learn from them. I'm sorry I missed that thread, for maybe I could have thrown something in to derail it sooner :). I know I woulda PM'd you sinbad:P!

The "internets" is such a wonderful place to have enlightening discussions </sarcasm>. I'm not sure that people have ever "convinced" anyone of anything on the internet, so I'm not convinced your mistake was all that bad. I've done it too. The Sinbadster does have a right to lead his board in such a way that will keep his community going that way it has for so long now. Even if you don't come back as mod (which I would love to see btw), I would hope you can still hold your head up as high as your post count deserves, hehe. Heck, I don't need mod privs to do the same thing you've been doing for years, which is to point out the BS and bring some truth to the table. I know what will cheer you up: Let's build an MMO with Ogre!!!!! I'll start a new thread and we can see how long it takes xavier to post. That would be epic ;). (greg, you know this is all in good fun)

I guess I'll have to set the off-topic lounge as my homepage so I don't miss anymore drama. I'm a real sucker for drama ... I like to watch TNT, afterall ;).

Can you stop this, please! :o

I have this song in my head..
You can check out any time time you like..
But you can never leave..
That is so true.

Especially when you're dealing with a community like this. :)

Thanks a lot people.

I guess I am a bit worn out - but I'll be back.
In a while.

As for Xavier..
Well, I still think you're the meanest, most brutal moderator in existence.
But people keep coming back for more.
