Hi guys,
I'm having a vision of a game that I like to share with you. My main goal is to get ideas of how to do it/what to do and what not to do. If me and a few developers can agree on a basic concept, then maybe we can build an amazing game.
Here goes my idea:
The game is based on a modern era first person shooter and focusses on the handling of a sniper rifle. My vision is to have full control over the weapon: One should be able to adjust every property the weapon supports. A few ideas:
- Manual bolt action control -> mouse gesture 'P'
- Scope elevation and lead adjustment
- Triggering with mousewheel -> pull finger
- Eye-scope distance control
- Mount different gun barrels / scopes / equipment
- bipod
- Breath control
- Find stealth
- Character training (Improved stability/nervousness/aiming speed/loung capacity etc. of the character)
- Full integration of "nature"-physics (Wind, rain, humidity, coriolis force etc. etc.)
- Weapon painting / ghillie suit painting for stealth improvement
- Night-vision
- barrel suppression
- etc. / other ideas?
The game focusses on reality and shooting that one perfect shot instead of shooting as many targets as possible. In order to achieve this, one needs to train with all the gun properties available and needs lots of target practising.
I do not specially care about how neat the scenery looks like, nor do I care about how awesome targets behave with that latest A.I. engine.
After having some sort of training, one could be solving missions where he will be assigned a spotter who gives hints (maybe a 2nd player?). One has to shoot long-range targets at a distance up to 1 mile with a bullet travel time of several seconds. While he has to calculate the necessary configuration, keeping track of the enemy and successfully hitting it should be the mission objective. The player should be able to/has to move to different locations in order to achieve his goal.
Maybe the game represents some real army personnel with just the equipment, guns and operation area they have.
I do not know if this idea could be solved in a multiplayer environment, as I think sniper-to-sniper shooting might not be too interesting, though could be worth paying a thought about it.
The long-term fun should lie in solving different missions and choosing the right equipment for solving the mission.
From a technical point of view, I thought about using PagedGeometry and SkyX for terrain and weather rendering. As this game requires not too many physics features (No need for fluid bodies or cloths for instance), a simple open source physics engine should be sufficient in my opinion.
I plan on releasing the game open-source, though I have no idea about the license yet.
For starters, I would develop a simple game without heavy 3D rendering - just to see whether it might be fun to play this game or not.
But before that, I want to collect as many opinions and ideas as possible to get a clear vision.
What I would like to know from you:
- What do you think about my plans in common? Is it doable or not? Will it be boring after a short term? What could be done to avoid this?
- Is anybody interested in participating?
- What related projects already exist?
Any ideas / critics is welcome as long as it contributes to the project.
Thank you for your answers.

I think it's simply not the right forum. Maybe this can be moved to the General Board?
