Our future robot overlords need your help!

Post by LiMuBei »

Hello Ogre Community!

I am a PhD student from Germany and am in the process of finishing up my thesis. Topic of the thesis is environment modeling for service robots (think: I, robot :)). To gather some data about how humans perceive their environment I created a little website which presents some artificial test scenes and asks you to rate it.

Completing the survey should only take you a few minutes and you would help me out a lot! Also helping robots understand our environment could be handy for you in the future, maybe our robot overlords will then show a little gratitude and spare you :D

So without further ado: http://i61p109.ira.uka.de/akasper/

If you have any questions, shoot away! I'll try my best to answer everything :)

If you want to know what robots you're currently helping, it's those two fellows:

See here to find out more!

If you want to play around with some robobts in Ogre, check out OViSE :)

Thanks!

I just want to put it out there - those robots in your picture and incredibly cool. They kind of remind me of ones from old sci-fi movies or tv shows except they're actually real!

I also did your survey, hope you get some useful data from it

Glad I could help out.

Very interesting research project you are working on. I had discovered your ogre application on googlecode before. So now I know what you're doing with it ;)
Very cool that you make some of your research applications available to the public.

Done pal. Are you going to be using fuzzy-logic or Markov chains for this spatial identification stuff?

Thanks guys for doing the survey! And yes, the robots are cool :) They still have a long way to go until they'll actually be useful to someone, but I think robot technology will be developing faster every year, much like the mobile devices.

@duststorm: I'll just use plain old Bayes for the identification for now. Since I'm at the end of the thesis I don't have time to do more fancy stuff. There are some approaches using Dirichlet Allocation that could be interesting and useful though.

I haven't made an official announcement on OViSE yet, because it's still in the beta stage. Hopefully I'll get around to do that in the future.
