Wireless USB Storage Stick

Post by Zonder »

I saw a while ago a USB stick that attaches to a partner USB stick to give access to another computers contents wirelessly. It emulated a normal USB Storage Stick to the device. But I cant remember what it's called!! does anyone know?

Just in case someone has a better idea I am going to use this with my smart tv so I can record programmes to my server directly then watch them on any other device without using a PC for recording. As the smart tv will only record to a USB stick.

If the tv is already connected to the network maybe it can offer you the contents of the storage device by means of ftp or ssh or even samba.
You could schedule an rsync or ftp transaction periodically to copy the files to your server. This is what I use to copy over the recordings from my sat receiver.

If you do use the solution you suggested, make sure that the bandwidth of the connection is high enough, as the video will need to be streamed at full speed to your server when recording. I somehow doubt a wifi connection will reliably handle a full 1080p stream in all situations (without proper buffer).

my tv will give record rewind/fastforward facilitys when a USB memory stick is connected (also schedules recordings). I got a N based wireless network (300Mbps) 2.4 and 5ghz range so that type of usb stick will work. I just can't remember the name of it they came in a pair one for the server one for the client :S

and yes on the bandwidth 1080p gets a bit choppy on my TV upstairs (wireless N 5ghz) but thats only in bad weather

I ran 720p video wirelss from server to router and wireless from router to tv for a bit and worked perfect :) (1080p nightmare) server back on 1gbps connection now though
