Forum Game: Who can find hardest Ogre Forum captcha?

Post by Vesa »

I gotta admit that it took me over a year between the first time I tried to register into Ogre Forums... until I actually completed the registration. The reason you ask? Captcha.

Is there any real reason for registration captchas being very difficult? I don't think I've ever seen any website having captchas this ridiculously hard to figure out, so I'm really wondering what could be the reason for this...

I consider myself having relatively good English skills even though it is only my 3rd language, but these captchas... If you get unlucky you might get over 10 nearly impossible to solve captchas in a row. I am sure Ogre is losing users because of this.

Can you find harder captcha than this?

Here are some random captchas:

I think the reason is the large amount of spambots that find their way to this forum.
Even with the current captions they seem to get past, but hopefully at least some of them are fend off by it.

Nah, it's just reCaptcha screwing around. It does that with all the sites that utilize it. Sometimes it's hard to read, but sometimes it's just plain impossible.

Do you need help? What have you tried?

The captcha does nothing these days, at best it's to stop the automatic spamming, the rest of it is humans that probably get paid by spam or account.

This their handy work for this morning;

And it's always like it. Luckily, the anti-spam software catches it all and hides it all. Unfortunately for us moderators (and admins) we have to do the clean up. It's just a waste of everyone's time.

I didn't know they would be using it for this kind of stuff also, but there's people getting paid for answering captcha's all day long.
They sit in front of their screen with some custom application, and different bots offload the captchas they encounter to them, upon which the human bots send the correct result back.
They get paid for each correct captcha they submit. It's usually done to fake or hack accounts where money can be found.

That was my reasoning about it, there are too many different styles of forums where buttons are placed differently. It's through a custom program that reads the HTML. In any case, There is a very long message posted when you submit a link, when your a new user. It clearly says that theses posts are not visible, but yet they persist.

It just grinds my gears, that all of this - the spammers going through forums, registration, posting, the detection, and the clean-up is a colossal waste of time and energy. There is no absolute sane reason why this kind of process needs to exist in this world, just to gaining a few bucks. It is as literally the same as grinding down entire mountains with an metal grinder to find precious minerals.

It's now up to 62 possible spam posts waiting in the queue to hand verify and deal with.
(I'll start on it soon. Oh joy)
