Am I bad? (Insert evil laugh)

Post by lonewolff »

Hi guys,

I came across this RTS game on my Daughters android device the other day.

http://www.finalfrontier.rs/

I love the concept behind it. But, in playing it, I find that it is slow (as I traced the game to be browser based, hence tracking down the above link), very buggy, poorly supported, poorly documented (well, no docuementation at all in fact...), no responses at all from the creator of the game in his own forum (the forum also hard to track down).

The Alpha, turned to Beta yesterday. The olny difference that I could see is that you are now sprayed with advertisments.

This guy has gone, the absolute opposite in the whole project than I would have gone.

Loving the 'idea' but totally frustrated by the handling by the solo developer, I was thining of taking this idea and doing it the 'right' way  (my perception of right anyway).

What are your thoughts on this?

Speaking of ads and android...
I found a guy yesterday called Mecro on the android store that has free apps for various transit services around the world (including brisbane's translink, which I use).
But his apps are just a web browser showing the official mobile website for the services, with ads added to the bottom. So he's just putting ads on other people's content without permission.

It depresses me that there are people in the world like this.

I may have to get rid of Tweetcaster for android, it's really pissing me off. I like it as a program and I don't mind the little ad bar at the bottom of the window (at least they really wrote a useful app, unlike Mecro). But at random times it now pops up a full screen ad. Several times I've accidentally clicked on the ad because it appeared just as I was just about to press on a tweet or scroll. Even worse, I've had the ad pop up after I've left tweetcaster and am in some other program! Annoying fullscreen ads on a random timer have killed any chance of me buying their apps, and I may stop using the free one too.

As for the Final Frontier game, part of me is against the idea of copying another's game too closely, but the rest of me likes the idea of making a better version of something that's badly made/supported.

Bummer for that, man! I haven't used android that much. But sounds like that guys is a dodgy dude.

As for my game, I don't think it would end up anything like Final Frontier. It has just sparked the 'creative juices' once again.

I have gone for years tapping away at the keyboard, since I joined this forum (geez, nearly 10 years ago!). Would be good to start (and hopefully finish something) that I really like again.

I started planning out the game yesterday and realised that I have to do it in reverse, if I am going for something multiplayer (network coding is another love of mine - as some of you here know) I'll have to start the server first.

So, I am doing this right now :)

But, bottom line. I am not planning on doing a straight rip of this game, it will end up being something that is my own 100%. 8)

I quite agree as well go for it :)

@kojack - I would have though the paid version didn't have ad's?

Correct, the paid version of tweetcaster wouldn't have the ads. But they made them so obnoxious in the free version that I don't feel they deserve money for removing them.

Started programming the server today ;)

[edit]
As I am (and many of us) can be guilty of never finishing a project. I was thinking of making a small-ish complete (but sort of proof of concept) game, to see what the public response is like. And if there was some sort of decent response, then do a KickStarter campaign and let the public vote for the games future.

What do you think of this approach? Either way, I would be happy (as I will have in theory completed something ;) ).
