New PSU

I think I've settled on the Lian Li A70 case. Half the price of the A7110 and has ten 3.5inch drive bays with fans all over them (I use a LOT of hard drives). Good looking clean design, psu can mount at the top or bottom, primary hard drive bays are side facing instead of front facing.
I'll probably get another sata hot swap bay so I can transfer stuff faster between my current system and the new one.
Now I just need to decide on a psu and I can start ordering.

650W Corsair (Single Rail- 52amps on 12v)

750W Corsair (Single Rail- 60amps on 12v)

Hehe, a 750W would melt if it tried to power my system.

Using the calculator at http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine my new system will need a minimum of 863W, or 1038W if I go SLI.

Since I don't like SLI, a Corsair 1000W should do. Although there's a couple of others I need to check reviews of first.

Amps are more important than Watts.

Watts = volts times amps.
If the voltage is fixed (12v line) then the current and power are proportional.

52A * 12.5V = 650W
60A * 12.5V = 750W
80A (the rating of the Corsair HX1000) * 12.5V = 1000W

If the site says I need at least 863W, then on a Corsair power supply I'd need 69A, which is beyond what a 750W 60A Corsair supply can deliver.

Yes but different PSUs distribute the total wattage differently among the +12V, +5V, +3.3V, etc.

If you have enough money for a system that truly requires 863 watts, then go for the holy grail of power supplies: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817703012 - there is no better. Best company, PC Power and Cooling - freaking monster power, and 7 year warranty.

PC Power and Cooling aren't directly available anywhere in australia that I could find.
I ended up getting an OCZ Elite Xstream 1000W. OCZ bought out PC Power and Cooling and the Elite Xstream is the first of the OCZ product line to use the PC P&C design. Single rail 80amp, tons of connections (designed for tripple sli), extremely quiet and great reviews. It's efficiency is great across a wide range of loads and it reaches peak efficiency at around 400-500W so when my pc isn't using much power this one won't be wasted. So I've got great efficiency with what's currently plugged in, and headroom for anything else I connect over the next 5 years (it's warranty period).

The Lian Li A70 case is awesome. It practically oozes quality. The only bad thing I can think of is that the top panel only has 2 usb ports instead of 4.

Now I just need to work out why installing visual studio 2008 has completely killed directx to the point where games like farcry 2, ogre apps and even directx sdk samples all lock up the pc, requiring a hard boot. They worked fine before installing 2008.

OCZ is not bad either. PC P&C is like Zeus, and OCZ and Corsair are like Poseidon and Athena.

Forgot to post about how the new hardware is.

It's extremely awesome! There's almost no noise from anywhere in my computer now (surprisingly).

What sucks is that my CPU is a huge bottleneck, scoring only 617 in 3DMARK06.

Many games that I play rely on the CPU heavily, and I can't ever get a good framerate in them.

The processor is an Intel Celeron D 346 3.06 GHZ single core.

One month and 3 days later...
I'm sitting there, writing a new ply importer to get some ultra high poly models into ogre to test 2 new things I'm working on. Suddenly, I'm staring at a blank monitor. An hour of disassambly, testing and using an imac (shudder) to google forums (and write this), I've confirmed that my OCZ Elite Xstream 1000W is dead.
Apparently a new revision came out around the time I bought it, to fix the problem of them dying all the time. I was unlucky and got the older model or something.

2-3 weeks expected replacement time. I wonder if my old psu will be able to handle my new system. I hope nothing else died when the psu went down.

Edit: Everything else seems ok. I've replaced the psu with my old 550W Antec. Everything is working, except it didn't have the right cables for my gtx280, so I've had to replace it with my 7800. So no cuda for a while. The 7800 is refusing to go to my lcd's native res of 1440x900, so I'm running a blurry scaled up/down 1280x1024.

Well, that sucks. At least I can get back to importing the stanford bunny.
